I think it’s safe to say we’ve identified one of our beaver’s favourite spots on the river here 🦫 We still don’t know how many we have here as they are very new to the River Camel here in Cornwall and not officially recognised as being established in this catchment yet.

I find him so fascinating to watch - his incredible tail, webbed feet and teeth clicking noises (sound on!).

It appears that he is doing something called “scent mounding”. Listen for the little fart noise 😆

Beavers scent-mark by raking up mud, leaves and debris with their forepaws into a small pile, then squatting over it to deposit castoreum and a**l gland secretion. It’s territorial signalling. Autumn is one of the two peaks for it (the other is spring). This is partly because this is ‘dispersal season’, when two-year-olds leave the natal lodge and go looking for unoccupied river. Resident animals mark harder when strangers are moving through.

I wonder if there are any ‘strangers’ moving through? 🦫👀
