On May 1, 1919, over 100,000 workers marched through Glasgow in one of the city’s largest-ever May Day parades, rallying at Glasgow Green with floats, red banners and calls for workers’ rights despite cold, wet weather.

Below is the iconic historical photo of the red flag in George Square, Glasgow, during the 1919 labour unrest ‘Battle of George Square / Bloody Friday, late January 1919’.

This is one of my biggest fails. I set up this video to record the moment when the , the US Army’s ceremonial music team from West Point played Last Post at Culloden.

What I actually managed to record was the minute BEFORE they played.

In commemoration of the anniversary of the battle.

Why can a 14-day trip to Scotland sometimes feel rushed?

On paper, two weeks sounds generous. It’s a real balancing act when I’m putting together an itinerary. I want it to sound breathless. That’s how I know I’ll hook my client – make them feel their trip is going to be a whirlwind. The problem is that on the road, that’s probably the last thing you actually desire.

The issue is rarely the number of days. It’s how those days are used.
Scotland appears compact on a map, and that can be misleading. Distances look manageable, but the reality of travel here is shaped by slower roads, shifting weather, and landscapes that invite you to pause — not pass through.

I spent half of my life travelling on coaches. What tends to happen is this:
An itinerary is built around places rather than time. Too many stops are included. Too much distance is covered and gradually, the experience becomes a sequence of arrivals and departures.
You see a great deal. But you don’t always experience very much of it.
A well-paced journey works differently.
Fewer regions.
More time in each place.
Space to respond to what you find — rather than moving on because the plan says so.
It’s not about doing less.
It’s about allowing what you do see to land properly.

Because the moments people remember in Scotland are rarely the ones they scheduled down to the minute.

They’re the ones they had time for.
Most itineraries don’t need more days — they need better use of the ones already there.

I know you want to stuff all of Scotland into two weeks. Believe me, it doesn’t fit. It’s like trying to watch Forrest Gump on fast-forward — you’ll see everything happen. And you won’t feel any of it.

You know, I’m not that much of a drinker. I rely on driving too much to allow myself to cut loose so often. Today, though, I took the opportunity to spend a day with Scotland’s national drink. Had a tour, blending masterclass and a wonderful lunch at the Scotch Whisky Experience on Castlehill with lovely clients, then for good measure, hit up Johnnie Walker on Princes Street – something I’ve meant to do since forever.

I am currently feeling no pain.
