It’s Men’s Health Week. Men's Health Week (MHW) is designed to give all boys and men access to the information, services and treatment they need to live healthier, longer and more fulfilling lives.

There’s some stark statistics when considering men’s health – both physical and mental.

The NHS has a helpful resource called The Men’s health Hub which explores a range of subjects linked to supporting mental and physical health including how to give yourself an ’MOT’, tips and tools for managing stress and men and mental health.

The MissionFit approach at Elysium service The Spinney sees many of the men supported there enthusiastically take part in a wide range of different physical activities – from playing golf to gym sessions and football to swimming.

One person has clocked up his 27th mile swum already this year!

In a week where we’re focusing on men’s health, it’s a great chance to celebrate their brilliant achievements in all things sport.

Elysium was represented at an international conference two weeks ago, when two colleagues – Regional Expert By Experience Lois Edmund and Senior Governance Manager South, Gareth Taylor – took to the stage to present at the International Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare in Utrecht.

The duo were invited to share Elysium’s perspective on the important role lived experience representation has been providing mental health services across the organisation.

This month we are focusing on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in its many forms.

Diversity, equity and inclusion are so vital within an organisation such as Elysium.

Having a workplace which is inclusive helps ensure it is a place where the culture is respectful and people feel they belong, that they are valued.

DE&I is important to Elysium because to help us offer the best care, our colleagues need to feel supported and included.

Throughout June we’ll be hearing from our six Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). These include a Race and Ethnicity ERG, Women’s ERG, Working Families ERG, LGBTQIA+, Neurodiversity ERG and Disability ERG.

The month will be an opportunity to reflect on the essential nature of DE&I, Elysium’s journey so far and our ambitions as we continue to embed DE&I across our organisation.

As our month of celebrating the Voices of Elysium comes to a close, we share the thoughts of a person supported at St Mary’s Hospital. In this Care in Focus film they tell us about developing service user representatives and making sure their voices are heard.

They share the benefits of taking on the role of Service User Representative, attending governance meetings and playing a part in ensuring the thoughts, experiences and voices of those supported at the service are heard and acted upon.

Today we share a very special Care in Focus film and a very important Voice of Elysium.

Ann is the mother of a former service user. In this inspiring short film, she shares her story and that of her daughter and she reflects on her child’s journey at Rhodes’s Wood Hospital, a specialist inpatient eating disorder service for children and young people.

She explores what recovery looks like from the perspective of a parent and the vital role played by staff support and communication.

And Ann hopes that by sharing her story, she can inspire and encourage other families and offer the hope and strength to never give up.
