Some places you visit. Others you wander into and quietly wonder how you’d never heard of them before.

Hidden in the Umbrian hills, in the woods below Montegabbione, La Scarzuola is one of those places.

It began with a thirteenth-century Franciscan convent, bought by architect Tomaso Buzzi in 1956. Over the next twenty years, he transformed the old vegetable garden into his own imagined city……a wonderfully eccentric world of stone theatres, staircases, towers, a ship and fragments of buildings that feel half familiar and half dreamt.

There is something quite magical about walking through it. Nothing is entirely as it seems, and that is rather the point.

After Buzzi died in 1981, his nephew Marco Solari left his life in Milan and came here to continue what his uncle had started, working from the drawings he left behind. He eventually opened La Scarzuola to visitors and, wonderfully, still guides people through it himself.

So you’re not simply wandering around an extraordinary garden. You’re hearing its stories from the person who has spent much of his life bringing it to completion.

It’s strange, beautiful, theatrical and completely unexpected……the sort of place you might never plan a whole trip around, but somehow becomes the part you talk about afterwards ✦

Property Spotlight: Club Med Bali, Nusa Dua

Bali, with a little more time to play.

Set along 500 metres of beachfront in Nusa Dua, Club Med Bali brings together the slower side of island life with the kind of days that can be as full……or as wonderfully unplanned……as you like.

Mornings might start with yoga by the sea, followed by a paddleboard or kayak out on the water. There’s plenty to tempt you away from the sun lounger, but equally no pressure to leave it.

A little of what you’ll find here:

→ 500 metres of beachfront overlooking the Java Sea
→ 38 included activities, from padel and pickleball to archery and flying trapeze
→ Kayaking, paddleboarding and snorkelling included in your stay
→ Sunset yoga and a beautiful wellness spa
→ Balinese flavours and local cultural experiences woven throughout the resort
→ All-inclusive dining, drinks and activities
→ Superior, Deluxe and Suite accommodation

We particularly like this one for couples, groups of friends and families travelling with older children. There’s enough going on for everyone to find their own version of the day, before coming back together for a long dinner as the sun goes down.

Perhaps that’s the lovely thing about Club Med Bali. You can arrive wanting to do everything……and feel equally happy doing almost nothing at all.

Our very first Agent Nouveau After Hours is coming to No.82…

On Wednesday 30th September, we’re keeping the doors open a little later for a Greek-inspired evening with Domes Resorts & Sovereign.

We’ll be joined by Stew Plumridge from Domes and Kim Sellman from Specialist Holidays Group, representing Sovereign, for an evening of beautiful hotels, holiday inspiration and plenty of conversation about places you might just find yourself wanting to escape to next.

And because so many of those places happen to be in Greece, we thought the food should follow.

We’re partnering with Romanzo’s Taverna for the evening, with a specially created menu of Greek-inspired canapés … souvlaki, halloumi, spanakopita, saganaki and mini baklava … alongside unlimited Prosecco, wine and beer.

Good food. A glass in hand. A little travel inspiration.

And hopefully somewhere new on your mind by the time you leave.

Wednesday 30th September
6pm – 10pm
Agent Nouveau, No.82 Poole Road, Westbourne
£25 per person

Places are limited, so please do get in touch with us to reserve yours. 🖤

Destination Spotlight: Aman has opened in Mexico, and it is not where you would guess. ✦

Amanvari opened on 1 August at Costa Palmas, on the East Cape of Baja California Sur, facing the Sea of Cortez. Eighteen casitas, and the first Aman in the country.

Not Los Cabos. This is the far side of the peninsula, where the desert runs down to an estuary and the estuary runs out into water Cousteau called the aquarium of the world.

Wake early, before the wind starts, and you get the Cortez flat, the light coming up straight off the water, and nothing on the beach but tracks.

By eleven the wind is up and everyone has come inside. That is the rhythm, and you fall into it by the second day.

At Agent Nouveau, we pin the openings you will hear about later. 🖤

Florence, but with a little more room to breathe.

Set up in the Renaissance hills, Collegio alla Querce looks out across terracotta rooftops to the Duomo, with old olive trees, gardens and the city sitting just below.

It’s the kind of place that lets you have both sides of Florence. Mornings by the pool. Long lunches in the gardens. A few quiet hours at Aelia Spa. Then, when you’re ready, the cobbled streets of the centro storico are only minutes away.

There are beautiful multi-bedroom suites too, which makes it particularly lovely for families or friends travelling together……everyone gets their own space, without losing that feeling of being away together.

And perhaps that’s what we like most about it. You’re close enough to dip in and out of Florence whenever you please, but far enough above it to come home to something altogether calmer.

Collegio alla Querce, Florence.

The gardens at Tjolöholm will do more for you than the house, and the house is remarkable. 🖤

It stands on the Halland coast an hour south of Gothenburg, facing the Kattegat. James and Blanche Dickson commissioned it in 1898, and their architect, Lars Israel Wahlman, gave them an English Arts and Crafts house with a Swedish accent, finished in 1904.

He laid out the gardens too, using hedges and walls to make rooms outdoors, then terraces that step down into the grass and the sea.

Pick a clear morning for the walk down through them. The hedges hold the warmth, the wind arrives about halfway, and the water opens out in front of you all at once.

You can spend a whole day here and never go inside.

At Agent Nouveau, we shape the trips that go quiet for a few days. ✦

⟡ Cold mornings, warm coast

You would pack a fleece and reef-safe sunscreen in the same case for this one, and both would earn their place. The crater rim is cold enough at dawn to see your breath. Zanzibar, one short flight later, never is.

January there sits inside its own short dry season, carried by a wind called the Kaskazi that settles the sea rather than stirring it. Warm air, flat water, and the salt on your skin before you have found your room.

Safari first, coast second, and a room chosen for what the season is doing outside it. We built this itinerary ourselves this month, with no client attached, working through it exactly as we would for you.

Come find us at No.82.

Destination Spotlight: A Hong Kong hotel you may have stayed in before, and would not know now. ✦

Mandarin Oriental The Landmark reopened on 1 June, its 109 rooms and suites redone by the Hong Kong designer Joyce Wang.

The change you feel first is the way in. There is a new entrance on Queen's Road Central, drawn from the grand houses of old Hong Kong, so you come off one of the loudest streets in the city and the noise stops before the lift does. That is a hard thing to manage in Central, and they have managed it.

The spa and wellness floors opened in July, with a lap pool and full thermal rooms.

The city does its best work after dark, so ask for a room high on the Central side and leave your curtains open.

At Agent Nouveau, we find the city hotels that know when to be still. 🖤
