Whale Sightings around the UK.

Whale watching is a pretty common event in the United Kingdom. However, not everybody knows the best spots to see whales. It is not as easy as just finding ocean water and then looking out with your binoculars. You need to know the best whale inhabited areas of the water. One whale watching place commonly known to Brits is Moray Firth, which is located in the Black Isle of Scotland. This is a great area for spotting humpback whales. This spot is also great for sighting bottlenose dolphins. Then in the Irish Sea you will have a great chance of spotting blue whales, which are the biggest living organisms in the world.
The United Kingdom does have their share of whale watching tours. This is especially helpful for tourists who are new to the UK and don’t know where the hot spots are located. Most whale watching tours will first bring you to the Isle of Mull, which is in Scotland. Whale enthusiasts can enjoy daily whale watch tours in this area from May to October. This time period is the best for sighting whales. In the Isle of Mull, you will most likely see the Minke whales, which often breach out of the water a lot. If you go toward Cardigan Bay in Wales, you can see fin whales along with some bottlenose dolphins.
You may be asking yourself, “What about the killer whales?” After all, this is the kind of whale that people really want to see. They don’t normally inhabit one particular area that can be called a hotspot for seeing them. They pretty much roam around the coast of Scotland in all different areas. Lately, they have been seen more and more around Shetland Isle of the Esha Ness. They are not always easy to spot because they move so quickly throughout the water with minimal effort. This is mainly because they are more of a predatory whale, which means they hunt other fish and even other whales. The best way to spot them is by their dorsal fins, which are huge. But don’t expect a killer whale to breach over your head like in the movie “Free Willy.” Just look for those big fins and big eyes coming out of the water. They are truly the best sight that you will have in your whale watching explorations.
Whale sightings are fun for both tourists and locals in the United Kingdom. Just ask around for whale tour guides. One tour guide we recommend is ResponsibleTravel.com

New Whaling Legislation.

The number of whales in the ocean has certainly diminished over the last century. The simple reason for this is because of all the whalers who hunt whales for meat and oil. Human beings have become the biggest predator of whales for this reason. This has caused whales to nearly become extinct; however, many countries want to prevent this from happening. So, an international treaty was formed to help protect whales from being hunted any further. Plus, there were more oil reserves discovered in places like Texas and this had made a good argument against hunting whales. Unfortunately, there are a few countries that ignore this treaty and continue to hunt whales.
Japan is a country that joined in on the international treaty to stop whaling. They claim they do not hunt whales anymore, except for “research” purposes. The International Whaling Commission legislation currently has certain loopholes regarding scientific research that Japan takes full advantage of. Then when it comes to the whale meat from the research they have a law that states that the meat cannot be wasted after the research is done. So, the meat ends up getting sold in the grocery stores for a big price. Japan does not seem to want to take responsibility for this and they continue with their colossal line of excuses. They seem to be able to get away with these excuses by bribing small countries to support their “research efforts.” This is a very sad thing considering that a small percentage of Japanese citizens actually like to eat whale meat. This is a meat that is usually consumed by the rich Japanese, since the meat is so much more expensive than other meats.
So can an international treaty really save the whales? It will certainly postpone the inevitable, but eventually the whales will be wiped out. Think about the simple things like fishing. Man fishes so much for seafood, but at the same time they are taking away food from the whales. After all, what do you think whales eat to survive? They eat other fish. It doesn’t help that man is taking those fish away. Plus, there is the huge pollution problem that comes from human beings. Have you ever heard about the Texas size junk of plastic that is in the Pacific Ocean? Whales sure don’t like eating plastic. These are the things that the international treaty cannot possibly stop. In order to save the whales we will have to stop producing plastic, stop fishing and stop emitting carbon into the air from our industrial plants. Do you think human beings will do this much just to save a bunch of whales in the ocean? Probably not, so enjoy them while they are still here on earth.

New Whale Skeleton Found!

A new whale skeleton has been found at the bottom of the ocean near Antarctica. This is the first time that a whale skeleton has ever been found in this area. The skeleton was found almost a mile below the ocean’s surface by a British underwater vehicle called Iris. These 35 feet of bones belonged to a southern Minke whale and they were found in an undersea crater located near the South Sandwich Islands. The thing that is unique about this finding is the tiny organisms that were found on these bones. There were about nine newly discovered species of creatures from the deep sea found harvesting on them.

When whales die their dead carcasses usually fall to the bottom of the ocean, so that is nothing of a surprise. Naturally, dead organisms in the ocean become food for other sea life. With whales, their dead bodies provide great nutritional value to deep sea life. After all, sea life from one mile down in the ocean pretty much live off of dying sea creatures that sinks from above. Even though their flesh decomposes within a matter of weeks, their bones will stay on the ocean floor for up to 100 years. This is what gives deep sea life, like bacteria and zombie worms, something to live off of. However, it is rare that scientists are able to find remains of the whales because the ocean is very deep and enormous. We don’t have underwater vehicles patrolling every inch of the ocean floor at all times. Usually, scientists will just pick a random spot in the ocean to investigate and rely solely on luck for discovering something. After all, that’s how the Titanic was discovered. Scientists had knowledge of where the ship had sunk but after searching that area they didn’t find it. Then years later an underwater vehicle in a different location happened to come across the sunken ship by accident. This is how most things are discovered in the deep sea and whale remains are no exception. With modern day technology, it is a little easier now with all of the high definition cameras that are brought underwater and give clearer images of the ocean floor. Perhaps more whale remains will be discovered in the future.
