Today marks the 82nd anniversary of the D-Day landings on 6 June 1944.

D-Day has a strong connection to North Devon. In the months leading up to the landings, thousands of American troops trained for amphibious assault operations on Braunton Burrows and the beaches of Saunton, Croyde, and Baggy Point, preparing for one of the most significant military operations in history.

Earlier this week, we were privileged to join the Assault Training Center Friends and a group of local history enthusiasts on "The Burrows Experience" - a fascinating guided vehicle tour of Braunton Burrows, learning more about the area's wartime history and the role it played in preparing the US Army for the challenges that lay ahead.

Today, Braunton Burrows is known for its breathtaking scenery, wildlife and peaceful landscapes. Standing amongst the dunes, it's hard to imagine the scale of the activity that once took place here.

As we mark the anniversary of D-Day, we remember all those who took part and reflect on the important history hidden within this remarkable landscape.

It's been one of the warmest May bank holiday weekends we can remember!

Beach walks or sand dune adventures? It's all on your doorstep...!

"Accommodation is clean, tidy and very nice to stay in, staff were helpful on both of our visits. Would highly recommend exploring the Burrows as well as walking on the beach, safe to say our dog had the time of his life and we had great holidays too. Will definitely be back …"
