'Belle' is coming home! Bear with us, this is a long one, you might want to grab a cuppa ☕️ and a couple of biccies 🍪 ….
Subject to everything going to plan, we are booked to pen out of Albert Dock in Hull at 08:45am tomorrow Friday 11th April, and will sail back to Bridlington. We will arrive into Bridlington Bay at approximately 2-3pm. Please note, it could be earlier or later than this depending on conditions affecting progress on the day. So, if you're about, feel free to give us a wave and welcome Bridlington's Grand Old Lady back to her home.
Unfortunately, this doesn't mean that we will be able to run at Easter. This winter has been a challenging one for us, Belle has been in dry dock since December as we have had a lot of work done. We always prioritise money being poured back into her maintenance and upkeep and this year has been no different. We have had a lot of the steelwork inspected and subsequently replaced, plus we're at the end of a 6-year project that has seen all the seat frames welded and strengthened throughout the boat. Added to this has been a big change in government regulations for us and, along with all other operators of older vessels, we have had to comply in order to operate this year.
These regulation changes are to bring all passenger vessels’ safety equipment and requirements in-line regardless of age, whether the boat is 78 years old or 78 days old. Luckily, we met all of the structural stipulations but have had to make some alterations and additions to meet the safety equipment requirements. As you can imagine this has been very costly and time consuming to implement and we’re almost there, we just have a few more installations due and our annual in water survey in order to qualify for our passenger certificate. Once all these are completed then we can begin the 2025 season on Saturday 3rd May.
We know people will be disappointed we’re not working at Easter, as are we. However, maintaining any vessel, but especially a 78-year-old one, is a very time labour-intensive occupation, and despite starting the maintenance considerably earlier than the last few years, there simply aren’t enough months in the winter period for the sheer volume of work we have had to get through, not forgetting we are an extremely small team. We also have to fit in around suppliers and surveyors’ schedules as well as availability of skilled tradespeople and professionals, and as always tides and weather dictate everything we do!
