Can you be a female town crier? Yes. Can you be young? Yes. Can you be both? Absolutely!
As an example, Erin Morgan became the first female and the youngest person ever to take on the ceremonial role in Tenby, Wales when she was 17. She said as a performing arts student, she was used to performing in front of large crowds, and could project her voice quite easily and by "having a young person in the role, it changes the view of what a town crier is".

Mayor’s Log 1   Bridport Mayor Making Ceremony – 7 May My journey started today when I took over the reins from Anne Rickard who has done a fabulous job for the past 2 years. She certainly will be a hard act to follow. The ‘Ceremony’ went well and will always be something that I…

The brilliant John Collingwood is retiring after many years’ service as Town Crier and Bridport Town Council is looking for a suitable replacement. If interested please contact the Mayor’s secretary on [email protected]

This is a voluntary, honorary role with livery provided and expenses paid. Attendance at certain civic events would be expected. In addition, other opportunities arise to promote the wonderful Bridport. In September we will be hosting a town crier competition for criers from around Dorset so ideally we would like someone in position by then. We are looking for someone who can make themselves heard without amplification! Town criers date back to medieval times when they were essential to deliver important announcements, using the bell and shouting "Oyez, oyez, oyez" to attract attention.

What a day to be in Bridport! 🎉

The Bridport Community Charter Fair is in full swing and the town is absolutely alive with it. Over at Millennium Green and Mountfield, the community is out in force, with the maypole and crowning of the May Queen kicking things off this morning, morris dancing from Wyld Morris, and a packed programme of live music running all the way through to 3pm. Bands and performers including Bridport Big Band, Broadsides, Bridport Choral Society, Trumbonium, Phoenix Youth Band, Bridport Musical Theatre and JAWES, plus so much more.

Over at Bucky Doo Square the music continues until nearly 3pm too, and Downes Street has street food, stalls and morris dancing.

There's a children's area, face painting, a magic show and Oopswow Creative Art for the little ones, and the Charter Fair and Above and Beyond Awards are being presented today to recognise outstanding service to this community.

Best of all, it's completely free. This is Bridport doing what it does best. 💛
