White Elephant, Malindi: Where the Beach Feels Like the Venice Biennale

We took an Uber out to White Elephant with no real idea what to expect, and ended up wandering through what felt like a private wing of the Venice Biennale, right on the sand.

White Elephant is the life's work of Armando Tanzini, an Italian sculptor who arrived in Malindi in 1969 and simply never left. In 1984 he turned a stretch of forest along Casuarina Beach, inside Malindi's Marine Park, into a hotel, sculpture garden and creative centre all at once, with vervet monkeys and sea eagles for company.

The Biennale comparison isn't just a nice turn of phrase either. The same sculptures scattered through these grounds have featured in Kenya's official presentation at the real Venice Biennale, in 2013 and again in 2015. Wandering between the three galleries on site, past Tanzini's monumental pieces and work by other African and international artists, has that same unhurried, gallery-hopping feel.

It carries straight through into the rooms too. Each one is different, designed and furnished by Tanzini himself, so a night here is really a night inside a small, bespoke gallery of its own.

Then there's the beach. Two pools sit right over the Indian Ocean, and we stopped there for a swim and lunch, that view stretching out ahead of us. It's the kind of setting that makes you slow right down.

✈️ AIR TRAFFIC CHAOS: WHEN YOUR TRAVEL AGENT REALLY EARNS THEIR KEEP…

Following yesterday’s air traffic control problems, thousands of passengers found themselves stranded at airports across the UK.

Families were forced into full survival mode—attempting to stay alive on £10 pints, airport meal deals and Toblerones the size of a small child. 🍺🍫
One man reportedly had to remortgage his house after buying his family a Full English breakfast two mornings in a row. 🥓🍳
WHSmith continued its humanitarian efforts by offering bottles of water in exchange for the contents of passengers’ savings accounts. 💧
Meanwhile, an air traffic controller was heard saying:
“It looks like I picked the wrong week to quit drinking and smoking…” 😆
