Throwback to when my short documentary on São Tomé, produced under Africa No Filter and the African Union’s Move Africa Grant, was showcased at UEAShortFest.

The Move Africa Grant exists to advocate for free movement across African countries, a vision of an Africa where borders do not limit cultural exchange, collaboration, or opportunity. This idea sat at the heart of the documentary.

For the project, we chose to focus on São Tomé, one of the least visited countries in Africa. Through the film, we explored the country through its landscapes, historical sites, people, culture, food, and everyday life, presenting São Tomé as it is—rich, layered, and breathtaking.

The documentary also raises an important question: what would change if Africans could travel freely across the continent?
If movement were easier, destinations like São Tomé would not remain hidden. Tourism could thrive, local economies could grow, and African travellers would be able to experience the diversity of their own continent without unnecessary barriers.

Screening the film at UEA Short Fest was particularly meaningful because it allowed the work to be engaged with as a conversation about mobility, access, representation, and the future of intra-African travel.

I remain grateful to Africa No Filter, the African Union, and everyone who supported the project.

I passed through the cafe inside Brighton Rail Station on my recent visit. ✨
The space has that warm, vintage-coffee-shop feel—simple, cosy, and welcoming. It’s the kind of place you can pause for a few minutes, breathe, and reset before catching your travel. Friendly service, good atmosphere, and a calm break in the middle of station rush. A nice little Brighton find.
