RYUGYONG HOTEL
33 years on since construction commenced in 1987, the 105-storey Ryugyong Hotel, often dubbed the ‘Pyramid Hotel’ for obvious reasons, is still to open its doors. As works continue we hope that 2020 will bring the news we have been waiting for….. for a long time! For now, we typically book our clients staying in Pyongyang into the Yanggakdo or Koryo Hotels, but can offer a number of alternatives for those after something a bit different. Contact Carl at [email protected] or on +44(0) 207 6661350 for further details.

One of many highlights of her time in Korea, here Sarah writes of her visit to beautiful Mt. Paektu, Korea’s highest peak. WHY GO TO NORTH KOREA?
Regent client & travel blogger ToonSarah joined our resident North Korea expert Carl this September on our annual Pioneering North Korea Tour. Her excellent day by day blog proffers a frank and entertaining writeup on what she encountered while in the DPRK, peppered with some of her lovely images. Starting at the beginning, here’s Sarah’s take on the question we are so often asked: Why go to North Korea?

ALL ABOARD FOR MT. PAEKTU
The dates of our domestic charter flights for 2020 are now confirmed, and we have group tours in both August & September which will ferry our clients to the far-flung north and northeastern corners of the DPRK, taking us to both Mt. Paektu and Chongjin in style, aboard a vintage Soviet era aircraft. Contact Carl at [email protected] for details.

KOREAN WAR ANNIVERSARY TOUR
Remembrance Day seems as fitting a date as any to showcase one of our one-off tours for 2020, the Korean War Anniversary Tour. This 11 night itinerary takes in the majority of sights which our ‘best of’ and ‘classic’ tours typically include, but also offers an increased focus on North Korea’s history and the Korean War, as the 25th June 2020 marks the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of 'The Forgotten War', known in the North as the ‘Fatherland Liberation War’.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR THOSE WHO MAY BE TRAVELLING TO THE USA
On the 6th August 2019 the US Department of Homeland Security announced, with no notice or warning, that anybody who has travelled to North Korea since March 2011 would no longer be eligible to visit the USA under ESTA (the visa-waiver scheme that has been in place since 2009 for 38 countries, including the United Kingdom). Accordingly, anybody who would have been able to visit the USA under this scheme and has visited North Korea since 2011, or who visits North Korea hereon, will need to obtain a full US visa should they wish to subsequently visit the USA. This does not mean that you cannot visit the USA after travelling to North Korea, you will just need to jump through a few bureaucratic hoops in order to visit the States. Please contact your nearest US Embassy / Consulate for further details.

INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR MONUMENTS AND SITES
In case you weren't aware (and really, why would you be?) the 18th April is the International Day For Monuments and Sites. The theme for 2019 of this UNESCO approved day is 'Rural Landscapes' - something North Korea offers up in spades (along with monuments, for that matter)!
