Ahh...Vincent!
Art of the Day: Van Gogh, A Peasant Woman Digging in Front of Her Cottage, c. 1885. Oil on canvas, 31.3 x 42 cm. The Art Institute of Chicago.
In his early years as an artist, Van Gogh dedicated much of his practice to the depiction of rural laborers at home and at work. "I see paintings or drawings in the poorest cottages, in the dirtiest comers," he wrote in 1882. "And my mind is driven towards these things with an irresistible momentum."
