What a winter. Just hoping that today is a blip and we can get on with spring. The garden has had wonderful snowdrops, crocuses and daffs and is definitely colourful. We had our first house tour in March, a first with tea and cake in the house on a pretty damp day. The next in April when the sun shone and the garden was full of people enjoying the sunshine. The oldest 90 made it down the green walk to sit under a parasol with his cup of tea. Great stuff.

Easter over and we have now had our first tour of the year. Much earlier than ever before. 32 from Harrogate in Yorkshire who are visiting the West country on a Historic House Association Friends Tour. They were all very jolly and enjoyed tea and home made cake in the drawing room after their tour (we thought it a bit cold for sitting in the garden the weather, fickle as ever then turned sunny and hot.Classic) One of our guests was a ceiac no gluten, no citric , no dairy so I had some fun making a coconut cake with cocnut flour and cocnut oil. We all decided that it was a good thing and it will no doubt be repeated.Yum! Sitting in the kitchen I'm watching Mr red knickers aka the Greater Spotted Woodpecker attacking the nuts on the bird table.

My goodness hardly time to turn round we have had a very busy time with the BnB which is great. Such a variety of guests from holiday makers to the latest guests who have finished breakfast and gone to work already. We are very handy for the Croner's Court just a short walk and have had another guest here for 3 weeks right on the Festival Way he could leap on his bike and work off the difficulties of the day.

Meanwhile we have a steady stream of apples requiring pressing. So good to see people enjoying their apples rather than seeing them lie rotting on the ground. It seems to be a good year. Our new trees are begining to fruit. One with a red flesh which is a bit wierd but they seem to keep their colour and not oxidise to brown so can be used in the BnB all the elements here aiding each other. Which is a good thing as I've indulged in a new green house which is coming today. Not entirely sure where we are going to put it but it has the luxury of a heater and will clearly be somewhere to hunker down in during the winter rain, pottering about in the potting shed. I can play with cuttings and early plant schemes combined with the hot bed on the muck heap.

What I must do is go and have a lesson on how I upload photos from my i-phone to computer. On that note I lost the phone while riding the other day. After an hour of fruitless walking my route back I rang O2 who advised me to go on the find my iphone web site and lo! it was exactly where predicted under a lot of comfrey I would never have found it otherwise as the comfry deadened the sound of the ring tone. How lucky was that?!!

The walls and terracing set the roses off so well here and I love the diferent textures and greens of the Sycamore, Mulberry and yew hedge against each other. Dublin Bay, one of the best red colours is fabulous and even vigerous this year which the puppies are ignorant of but enjoying romping about the garden growing almost as fast as the weeds in the garden. Now is the time of year when we begin to lose the race but at least everywhere is verdant so a few nettles and things help the butterfies they are not exactly rare here.

So Boli has had her puppies now a week old. They are all 6 doing well and she is, as expected a great Mum. How could such a friendly character not be? It has been hard work though as she went very off her food, not eating anything except fresh cooked chicken, lamb or fish most of the week. The pups seem to be twice the size and she is now eating some 'proper' dog food but of course only the best! It was late last night when we finished so it was down to Picalo's for fish and chips No salt and vinegar for the dog but certainly a favourite. Was there ever such indulgence normality may be hard to re-establish....

The garden is full of colour and the sun shining what more could one ask for but to work in such a wonderful setting. We have had several house tours which have been as always very friendly and fun. Mum in her element loves taking people round. The choisia (mexican orange blossom) fills the green walk its blossom this year is teriffic and the scent wafts up through our bedroom windows. I have never seen such huge raceems on the wisteria which also wafts its scent headily around the garden. It would be better if the wind would drop a bit but one can't have everything. It does encourage hard work while in the garden, to keep warm!

Christmas is over. The dust is settling and the ryyhm of life sinks back to our winter routine. The difference this year is that finally we are recovered from last Febuary's flood. The carpets look great and my wallpapering skills have been brought up to scratch again. With the bit between my teeth so to speak I'm just about to attack the BnB and the girl's room. We won't know ourselves. Underlay instead of brown paper, common circa 1920 it seems, has made a lot of difference to the temperature in the house though I expect that it will take some serious weather before we really test it. Lucky BnB get the heating while we run faster between the pockets of heat. I shall be glad when we get curtains in our bedroom again, crazy that listed houses are not allowed double glazing. Some people may be amazed but it is the first time that our room has had a completely fitted carpet. It used to be that a wood border was left around the edge. It did set the carper off well but this is easier in many ways. Just getting up the strength to go shop for remnants in the sales. Oh and just noticed, another tile off so its roofing today.......
