🌍 Greetings from Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina 🇧🇦 🌍

The Neretva River has been running higher than usual after days of rain, making the view of the Old Bridge (Stari Most) even more dramatic.

Mostar is always breathtaking — a city where culture, history, and nature meet in one unforgettable landscape.

✨ I’ll be sharing more moments from my travels across the Balkans in the coming days — hidden towns, landscapes, and of course the food! Stay tuned.

Istria, Croatia is full of so many historical gems. 🇭🇷 This is a 13th century wall painting in St Vincent’s church, Svetvinčenat. The top half shows Jesus Christ in Heaven, but the bottom half shows the Devil destroying souls as they burn in the hellfire 🔥 One of them is being crushed in his mouth.

How’s that for motivating people to listen to their priest?

Bale, Istrian peninsula, Croatia 🇭🇷 This historic town is in south-west Istria. In Bale, both the Croatian and Italian languages are in official use. The 2021 census revealed that almost 50% of the population spoke Italian. Meanwhile, the Lion of St. Mark-the historical symbol of Venice-stands proudly in the city gate and is a reminder of when Venice ruled this part of Istria. Venetian influence in Bale’s architecture is easy to see.

We loved Bale, which was so full of culture and history whilst its streets are exceptionally clean. It’s very much worth a visit.

🚨 WE’RE BACK! 🤩 After the disaster of Covid we are back in action to bring you new travel content and tours. Here is me (Dino, founder) in Korčula old town, Croatia, earlier this year 🇭🇷
We have re-worked and updated our offerings and will for the time being focus on tours in the Balkans (particularly to Croatia 🇭🇷 and Bosnia and Herzegovina 🇧🇦). In addition, we have created itineraries in Bristol, UK and the Cotswolds! But these are with our own twist, involving getting you beneath the surface and off the beaten track to really discover these destinations.

In just a few days, we are departing to the Balkans for our own travels. Our first destination is in Istria, north-west Croatia. Make sure to follow along!

WE’RE BACK after a turbulent few years of Covid and upheaval! We hope that everyone has been safe and well. ⭐️ Silence has plagued this page for so long, but there will be regular content once more. In September and October, we travelled back to our region of the former Yugoslavia, specifically Croatia 🇭🇷 and Bosnia and Herzegovina 🇧🇦 Here are a couple of photos from that trip which were taken on Mljet island, Croatia. This is one of our favourite places in the region, and a stop on our upcoming tours scheduled in 2023. Our website should be back very soon after getting hacked; resolving it has been a longer process than we thought! Please bear with us a little longer 😊

Dear all,
Real Escape Travel has been quiet recently because, for obvious reasons, no travel is happening.

However, I’m excited to announce a new idea in the interim. I will be sharing authentic recipes collected on my travels, plus travel stories and cooking videos. Good food is a key feature of all our tours and I look forward to sharing recipes with you.

All recipes will be published on the Real Escape Travel website blog. The links will also be posted here as well as being sent in our newsletter.

Pljeskavica (Balkan ) in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina 🇧🇦 The meat is so juicy and full of flavour, as well as being thinner and wider than a Western burger. Here it is served with lepina (soft, unleavened pita bread), ajvar (Balkan aubergine and roast pepper sauce), local Balkan white cheese and salad. Yum yum!
