Sometimes, you just want to pause and take it all in.

Take in how lucky you are to travel. Yes, it's a privilege.

Many will not travel outside their country, ever. Not because they don't want to: because they can't afford to (time, money, responsibilities).

I'm aware of my privilege, of being able to quit my job, of being able to afford the risk of leaving it all behind to "just travel" without a real travel plan.

And for that, I'm immensely grateful.

Backpacking isn't always easy. Travelling isn't always easy.

But I promise you, it is SO worth it!

Did you ever feel so happy that you wanted to cry when travelling? I'd love to hear about it! ⬇️

In the wake of everything happening in the world...

It's easy to feel scared.

To feel divided.

To want to protect ourselves, to make plans for the worst-case scenario.

It's in our human nature. We hate uncertainty. Uncertainty brings chaos.

The mainstream media nowadays are feeding us constant fear for what's to come. There's always more. There's always worse.

As someone who's studied International Law, Political Science and Public Diplomacy, as someone deeply interested in geopolitics and the state of the world, I tell you...

Consuming mainstream news is not how you "know" the world. It will only give you anxiety and make you feel like WWIII is just about to happen (as we've been saying for over three years now).

I'm not saying bad things are not happening. TERRIBLE things are happening. But the way they are conveyed in the media make you want to cry and build a bunker.

If you want to see the good side of humanity, if you want to believe in the future, if you want to see people's best nature... TRAVEL.

Travelling opens your mind so much, and it makes you be present, be there for each other, go back to the basics where generosity and selflessness are the ways the world works.

Of course, this doesn't take away everything else that is happening. Nothing will.

But at least it makes you see the people that the media told you to be afraid of, as human beings. People just like you and like me, with hopes and dreams, with fears and insecurities. With families to take care of, with expenses to cover. Just people.

And it makes you believe that a better future is possible, however much pain and helplessness we're all feeling right now with everything that's happening.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this!

KL can be pretty relentless...

If you don't know the basic do's and dont's!

To make your life easier, here's a list of the tips you absolutely will need to survive in the big city - here are the worst mistakes to avoid:

1️⃣ Not having a raincoat on you at all times - trust me, it doesn't matter that the weather is sunny and you're sweating all day. It WILL rain at some point - so be prepared!

2️⃣ Conversely, not having sunscreen on you at all times can also be paid dearly with a pretty epic sunburn. It's a basic must to survive.

3️⃣ Not knowing Malaysians' biggest hack to stay cool during the scorching heat: the shopping malls. There's nothing better to spend the odd hours at midday than hanging out in the places with the best AC in the city! Sunway Putra Mall was my absolute go-to: save it on your to-go list!

4️⃣ Being afraid of street food: trust me, it took a bit to let go of the fear of getting a stomach bug, but the food is pretty safe in Malaysia in general if you follow the basic universal guidelines - and you would be missing out on SO much if you skipped the famous night markets!

5️⃣ HOWEVER, another mistake is not checking the places on Google Maps before you go - I sat down at a few places and just double-checked the reviews on Google Maps before I ordered. Then I discovered photos of baby cockroaches on the food, things that weren't supposed to be on the plate, etc. Always double-check to be on the safe side!

6️⃣ Exploring the Botanical Gardens at midday - a big no-no! Unless you want to get a sunstroke (fever & headaches for the next few days) plan for early or late in the day! Avoid the 11AM-16PM hours for that & pretty much anything that requires long hours in the sun.

7️⃣ Not learning to enjoy the rain - if you get all grumpy and want to stay indoors every time it rains, you'll spend your vacations in your room. When in Malaysia, do like the Malaysians: learn to live with the sun, the rain and everything in between. Life goes on!

8️⃣ Only going for the big attractions: yes, the Petronas are pretty impressive, but have you ever heard of Taman Tugu? Because you should!

Is saving money worth risking your life?

Some would say yes, but I thought better about it...

And there are far safer areas of Thailand to visit, where armed insurrection isn't really a thing...

So doesn't it make sense to lose the 20$ and take a better route?

This was a tense moment to say the least...

SAVE this reel so you will have these tips at hand!

I thought I was about to get attacked by crab-eating macaques!

We saw them attacking some tourists just before we had to cross the bridge... and they didn't show signs of wanting to go away any soon!

Attempting the crossing demanded the following basics (save this so you will remember when you encounter them!):

1️⃣ NEVER show monkeys your teeth: this signals aggressiveness, as if you were preparing for a fight. So they will too.

2️⃣ Do NOT look at monkeys directly in the eye: this signals a challenge, as if you want to prove that you are stronger than them. So they might want to prove you wrong.

3️⃣ Do NOT feed them: you might think that feeding monkeys is funny or cute, but you're teaching them that you're a source of food. So you're making them rely on humans more and more.

4️⃣ Keep your valuables close to you: they have no interest in your phone or wallet, but they know you do. If they want your food, they will try to take something that you care about - so that you will give them food in exchange for recovering it.

SAVE this reel so you always remember these tips!
