Long before pumpkins, sweets and horror films, Halloween had a much darker beginningโ€ฆ

Welcome back to my Historical & Mysterious Destinations series, where today we're travelling back to ancient Ireland! ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช

Over 2,000 years ago, Celtic communities celebrated Samhain, marking the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter.

But there was something rather unsettling about this particular nightโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ‘€

It was believed that the boundary between the living and supernatural worlds became thin, allowing spirits and mysterious beings to cross over. And not all of them were believed to be friendly!

Bonfires were lit as part of rituals associated with protection, while disguises became linked with warding off or confusing wandering spirits. Today, we dress up for trick-or-treating, and instead of carving frightening faces into turnips, we carve pumpkins! ๐ŸŽƒ

Over time, these traditions mixed with Christian celebrations, including All Hallows' Eve, shaping the Halloween we know today.

In 1977, an ordinary family home in Enfield, North London, became the centre of one of Britain's most chilling paranormal mysteriesโ€ฆ

The Hodgson family reported furniture moving on its own, unexplained knocking and even claims that 11-year-old Janet was levitating and speaking in a strange, deep voice ๐Ÿ˜ณ

These mysterious events became known as the Enfield Poltergeist, later inspiring the horror film The Conjuring 2! ๐ŸŽฌ

But this isn't London's only chilling taleโ€ฆ

From the faceless woman said to haunt Becontree Station to Hangman's Hill, where cars supposedly roll uphill on their own, London and its surrounding areas are full of eerie legends and mysterious history waiting to be explored.

We've all heard of Count Dracula, the bloodthirsty vampire made famous by Bram Stoker. But did you know his name has links to a real-life ruler?

Meet Vlad the Impaler, a man whose brutal reputation was enough to send shivers down anyone's spine! ๐Ÿฉธ

Legend has it that Vlad once wandered the narrow halls, climbed the winding staircases and peered out over the Transylvanian mountains from Bran Castleโ€ฆ but there's no solid evidence he ever lived there!

However, with its medieval charm, hidden passageways and centuries of history tucked behind its walls, it's not hard to see why this castle became so closely associated with Dracula's legend ๐Ÿฆ‡
