The History Of Paphos Castle, Cyprus

I visited this castle, thinking about it's history and what may have happened over it medieval years to now.

It stands proudly at the edge of Paphos Harbour, this castle has watched centuries of history unfold.
Originally built as a Byzantine fortress to protect the harbour, it was later rebuilt and strengthened by the Lusignans in the medieval period.

Over the years it has seen battles, changing rulers and different chapters of Cyprus’ story - including the Venetian and Ottoman periods. Parts were destroyed and rebuilt, leaving behind the castle we see today.

The castle has been used as a fortress, a place for soldiers, a prison and even storage - each era leaving its mark on the ancient stones.

Today, it’s a beautiful reminder that travel isn’t just about beaches and sunshine… it’s about walking through the stories of the past.

It is 2.50€ entry!
