Children's Occupational Therapy
Assessment, Treatment and Training

With nearly 20 years experience as an Occupational Therapist within the NHS, both in clinical and managerial work, and the last 10 of those within Children’s services (including establishing and providing services within children’s centres) I have seen the impacts that can be made on children’s and family’s lives. Physical, perce

ptual and sensory difficulties can prevent children from participating in daily living tasks (eg dressing, feeding etc.), playing with peers, interacting in classroom or other activities (including pencil and scissor skills), as well as impede self esteem, and can affect the whole family. Although the NHS provides excellent Children’s services locally, they remain under great pressure leading to gaps in service, and often waiting lists.

‘Children’s Choice Therapy Service’ aims to offer to children, parents and other services the choice and availability of Children’s Occupational Therapy Services within the independent sector, to compliment NHS and educational services, or to meet needs not currently provided. Assessments can be carried out at home, school, or within chosen environments. Treatments may be provided individually or within a group if available. As an Occupational Therapist I am Health Professions Council Registered, and have Sensory Integration accreditation.

As an Occupational Therapy service our aim is to understand your child's/ young person's barriers to everyday function. We love the privilege of getting to know you and your child to aim to give understanding and clinical strategies to help everyday life. Our aim is always to open up your child's world with you. This is often maintaining school placement with all the excellent support from schools. Sometimes it's about identifying the requirements in school within school remits or with additional support from colleagues in the LA. And sometimes seeking alternative opportunities for learning. With tight budgets and poor procedures this is often a battle for all involved and can often distract from the reason for assessment. This can make work challenging as we know you can also find these battles overwhelming. We will always try our hardest to see the child at the centre of everything.

We are excited to announce a new online training course for parents who have children with sensory feeding difficulties.

Feeding is an intricate combination and coordination of skills. It is the single most complex and physically demanding task an infant will complete for the first few weeks, and even months, of life. Many children with sensory sensitivities have eating and drinking difficulties. Difficulties can range from a very restricted or limited diet (due to taste or dislike of how it feels) to mouthing or chewing objects (food and non-food). Having big reactions to different foods and smells and struggling to sit in an upright position.

This 1-hour online course will discuss the many different difficulties children with sensory sensitivities have with eating foods, the processes for ‘sensory eating’ and help parents to develop practical at home strategies to help children eat a wider range of foods.

The course will be delivered by Jess Quinn and Sarah Terry, Occupational Therapy Sensory Practitioners, and Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) trained therapists.

Date and Time: Thursday 26th June at 6:30pm – 7:30pm. Cost £10 per person. Email [email protected] to book a place.
