When I discovered the benefits of walking poles

Six years ago, I got hit by the earth-shattering revelation that walking poles aren’t just for old folks.

Balance? Check.
Stability? Injury prevention?
I never leave them at home. They are a permanent extension of my arms.

They stop you face-planting down steep bits and make you zip along faster—uphill, too, with that extra arm boost. My knees and hips are saying thank you daily. Never going back.

The awkward phase passes soon after you get the hang of them. Let me show you how to pole like a pro.

Three blondes rub lotion into a young man— but calm yourself down… it’s not the usual happy ending you might expect.

Well… because obviously, that’s how we planned our weekend.

We found him, heat-stroked and clueless, passed out in the blazing sun, attempting to haul a pack up Crib y Ddysgl. What was a slow and steady group scramble, turned into a full rescue mission.

While we were a fit, prepared group, he had no sun protection, no water, and no clue. No hat or urgency in his personal condition.

So our gentle but sweaty day turned into a rescue mission. Lesson: The mountain won’t forgive your mistakes, but we might.

So Finlay, if you are out there I hope you managed cool down that evening and remember your hat and sunscreen for the next expedition.

Please don’t underestimate the effects of the heat! Unless you want to be pinned down by us and factor 50.

I’ve argued this on many occasions… it’s doesn’t work as a deterrent but is necessary to validate an enforcement.

The problem runs deeper than this.

🚗 Top tips for travellers

🛍️ Double or triple bag waste for the journey home, because nobody wants eau de warm banana skin

📦 Use a large plastic container to store rubbish securely

🌞 On long hot journeys, sealed containers are brilliant for keeping smelly waste contained

Do you dare? Are you in?

Take back the mountain.
Take back the wild places.
Take back the reins.

See litter being dropped?
Challenge it.

Music blasting on the mountain?
Challenge it.

Dogs off leads around livestock or wildlife?
Challenge it.

Dogs struggling in the heat?
Challenge it.

Dog waste bags abandoned?
Challenge it.

Most people aren’t about to pull a knife or firearm on you on the hill.
Most are simply caught off guard that another adult has calmly explained why their behaviour affects everyone else.

And here’s the thing:
90% of the time, people comply.

Not because you shouted.
Not because you acted like the Outdoor Police.
But because you spoke normally, respectfully, and educationally.

The outdoors doesn’t stay wild through signs, social media posts, or “awareness.”
It stays wild when ordinary people decide standards matter and stop pretending bad behaviour is somebody else’s problem.

The UK needs a revolution in how to treat outdoor spaces. There’s enough of US.
