Mount Everest. Chomolungma (ཇོ་མོ་གླང་མ). Sagarmatha (सागरमाथा). This magical mountain is special to so many people.

Our CEO, Rhys David, had the great honour of meeting Jamling Tenzing Norgay, the grandson of Tenzing Norgay, at Tengboche Monastery around this time last year.

“Jamling Tenzing Norgay was so generous with his time for the whole group on that trek, the spiritual setting of the monastery and the timing of being so close to Everest Day,” says Rhys, “it made an unforgettable trip even better.”

Everest Day recognises the historic first ascent of Everest by both Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary. The day was introduced by Nepal, after Hillary’s death in 2008, to recognise the achievement of both Hillary and Norgay in 1953.

Since then, over 12,000 people, aged from 13 to 80 years, have summited this peak. This year alone has seen more record-breaking ascents and climbers continuing to inspire the world to visit this important peak.

We also acknowledge how important this mountain is to the Sherpa community and those who make their livelihoods along the trekking routes. It is always a pleasure when our Yetis join the groups making their way to Everest Base Camp. And we hope that everyone on the mountain today is taking a moment to appreciate this historic anniversary.
