Not far from Harper’s Cottage is Bodmin Moor with its astonishing stone structures, clear quarry pools and ancient stone circles. Dotted about are engine houses, still standing and evoking the times when mining was in operation here.

Seeing wild ponies roaming Dartmoor’s moody landscapes is a highlight of visiting Devon. But it’s crucial to remember they’re wild animals, and there’s etiquette to follow:

✅ Never feed them. Human food can harm their health, disrupt their natural diet and encourage dangerous roadside encounters. Plus, it can lead for them to associate humans with food.

✅ Give them space. Ponies may look calm, but they can react unpredictably if they feel threatened or cornered. Keep a respectful distance.

✅ Keep dogs under close control. Dartmoor ponies can become stressed or defensive if chased by dogs.

Following these simple guidelines keeps Dartmoor ponies safe - and ensures the moor stays a welcoming place for all!
