Competition day video log.

Great day today for my first crack at a weight lifting competition.

One of my goals for 2025 was to enter a weight lifting competition. Another one was to post a little more training content on social media. So two birds with this short journey and a couple of goals ticked off the list nice and early.

I really enjoyed practicing the Olympic lifts for a few wks in a row and it's definitely something I'll keep up. So much room for improvement and even after a few wks feeling the benefits from the consistency.

Monday night training

Here is a look at a training session with my sister-in-law the other evening.

The first 30 minutes we trained a lot of mobility and accessory work for our Barbell Cleans later on.

This sort of general athleticism/training is the foundation for Olympic lifting like a LOT of other Sports. The capacity to get in and out of different positions in Sports without straining muscles requires regular controlled repetition. So light & body weight exercises through a big range of motion like the ankle walks , low side lunges , split squats, deep squat / hip lifts, stick around the shoulders are the foundation for sport longevity and confidence in performance. These regular motions also make you feel so good.

The accessory ( or necessity!) work like wrist rotations & slant board calf raises ensure we're staying strong from the ground up. For the power clean later in the video we need to be strong all the way up onto the balls of the feet and the grip/wrists need to be strong to avoid unnecessary discomfort/ injury while repeating the movement with gradually heavier loads.

The Plyometric work with the hurdles hops develops reactionary strength, promotes coordination and balance and again helps prepare the body to absorb impact and move well. Done regularly it helps us feel light on our feet and again decreases the chances of injury.

I wanted to share this workout because often on social media you'll see the Pinnacle of the performance pyramid with people executing super impressive lifts and other impressive feats without seeing the bread butter type foundational training that needs to be done consistently to move well and feel good πŸ‘πŸΌ

If you haven't heard of Hyrox or not sure what it entails, it's a gruelling work out consisting of :

1 km run
1000m skierg
1 km run
50m sled push (102kg)
1 km run
50m sled pull (78kg)
1 km run
80 meters Burpee / Broad jumps
1 km run
1 km Rower erg
1 km run
200 meters Farmer carry (2*16kg KB)
1 km run
100 meters Sandbag (10kg) travelling lunges
1 km run
75 x Wall Balls (4kg)

Fantastic achievement Hols when done
