Provence, from a quiet corner of the Luberon

There's a version of Provence you find in guidebooks, and a version you find by staying long enough to wander off the main road. Follow the lanes out of Gordes towards Murs and the Col du Murs, and you're soon deep in the Luberon's forests and villages, with barely another car in sight.

Roussillon glows red and ochre against the hillside. L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue fills with antique dealers every Sunday morning along its canals. And somewhere between the two, in the shade of a market umbrella or on the terrace with a glass of rosé, you'll hear the cigales start up as the light softens into evening.

✨ Introducing L'Olivetta, Ostuni ✨

Set in the Puglian countryside between two of the region's whitewashed towns, L'Olivetta combines traditional stone architecture with simple, modern living. A shaded veranda runs the length of the façade, and inside, vaulted ceilings and exposed stone nod to the local building style.

Outside, it's all about slowing down. The garden brings together lawns, terraces and a generously sized pool with Roman steps, while a separate covered terrace with its own barbecue is made for long lunches. Ostuni and Carovigno are both a 10-minute drive, and the nearest beach at Torre Santa Sabina is 20 minutes away.

Soak up the view in Ronda, Andalucia 🌿

The Puente Nuevo spans a 120-metre gorge, with the whitewashed town balanced on either side. Stand at the right spot and the drop beneath your feet feels almost impossible. Ronda has been drawing visitors for centuries, and it's easy to see why once you're standing on that bridge.

Where the lawn ends, the vineyard begins.

Château Lalande stands at the end of a long drive, its pale stone façade framed by a tall pine, and from the upstairs windows an avenue of clipped cones leads the eye across the lawn towards the vines. Inside, tall windows let light fall across parquet floors and antique furniture, while outside the heated pool sits beside the lawn, with covered terraces looking over the vineyard.

Across the grounds, the owner's cave holds rows of oak barrels, and Saint-Émilion, the first w**e growing area to be listed by UNESCO, is a 15 minute drive away.

A cobbler's cottage in Rustrel

'Le Petit Mas Maçon' began as a cobbler's cottage, one of a small cluster of stone buildings in the Provençal village of Rustrel. It has since been carefully restored, and the original stonework is still there.

The village is known for its ochre cliffs, and the footpaths of the Colorado Provençal start from Rustrel itself. They cross old quarry hills and pass rock formations known locally as fairy chimneys. It is a short walk from the front door, which is just 250m from the village centre.

Back at the house, a gravelled courtyard garden sits behind stone walls. There is a shaded place to eat, a barbecue, and a small private pool for cooling off. Lunch can stretch into the afternoon here, and an apéritif fits naturally into the evening.

Inside, there are two double bedrooms, each with its own shower room, and a kitchen that opens onto the terrace. Rustrel's café, restaurant and mini market are close enough that the car can stay parked.

Apt is 15 minutes away for its Saturday market, with fresh fruit, bread and olives to bring home.

A quiet corner of Mallorca, and a home built for spending most of your day outside.

Half an acre of lawned garden, a private pool with Roman steps, and terraces made for lingering - Can Cuxach in Pollença knows how to do outdoor living.

Mature trees offer shade as the sun moves round, bougainvillea climbs the whitewashed walls, and the in-built barbecue means you can cook and eat outside just as easily as in. With the Tramuntana foothills as a backdrop and doors opening straight from the living areas onto the garden, the line between indoors and out barely exists here.
