Did you know that St Patrick, revered as the ‘Apostle of Ireland', wasn't actually born in Ireland?
In Patrick's autobiographical 'Confessio', he writes that when he was about sixteen, he was captured by Irish pirates from his home in what is now modern-day Britain and taken as a slave to Ireland, where he worked as a herdsman.
After six years in captivity he fled, possibly back to his home. He was ordained as a priest and returned to Ireland where he played a major part in converting the country to Christianity. By the seventh century, he had already come to be revered as the patron saint of Ireland.
