✈️ What your travel agent WON’T tell you… about coming home 😂

We’ll happily tell you all about the sunsets, the sea views and the cocktails by the pool.

What we won’t tell you is what happens in the first few hours after you land back home. Because honestly? If we did, you’d never book a holiday again.

So here goes… and yes, most of this happened to us just this week, coming home 😂

🏃 The Great Immigration Stampede
The seatbelt sign pings off and suddenly it’s the Grand National. Perfectly sensible adults abandon all dignity, overtaking each other down the corridor… just to join a queue. You’re coming back to your own country, yet standing in front of that officer you’re full of dread, as if you’ve got something to hide. And if the e-gates are open? The one you pick takes one look at your passport and flatly refuses to read it.

🧳 The Baggage Carousel Lottery
Your first case comes round almost straight away. Brilliant! Then you wait… and wait… as everyone else’s bags glide happily past.

🚽 The Great P*e Dilemma
Meanwhile, you’ve been holding it in for most of a 14-hour flight. So has everyone else on the plane. And the loos by the baggage carousel are the first ones you come across since getting off… so EVERYBODY has to stop by. You look at the sign for the loos. Then at the carousel. Then back at the loos. You’re bursting… but after a whole planeload has beaten you to it, what state are they going to be in? Urghhhh! 🤢 Do you dare, or do you wait? And what if your case comes round while you’re gone?
Sod it. You HAVE to go.
You needn’t have rushed. Your second case finally appears: second from last. Every single time. Who decides this?!

🚶 The Customs Corridor of Guilt
Not a single duty free to your name. Yet as you walk through that green channel, your face is screaming that you’ve got six bottles of spirits, a kilo of ci******es and a dozen designer perfumes stuffed into your wheely cabin case. 😳

🚗 The Journey Home
Car, coach, train or a driver holding up your name… there’s one thing nobody ever budgets for, and that’s the trip home. The holiday money’s long gone, but there you are at the station or the motorway services, paying eye-watering prices for drinks, snacks and a sandwich you didn’t even want. And if you drove to the airport? You’ve probably travelled miles to get there for that long-haul flight, so just as you pull onto the drive… ping! On comes the fuel light. Empty. Just like the fridge. (We’ll get to that.)

🏠 Home Sweet Home
Before we left, we’d sensibly cleared the fridge of anything that could go off. Very smart at the time. Not so smart when you walk back in starving. The bread’s stale, the cupboards are bare… and thank goodness for that carton of long-life milk, or there’d have been no coffee either. Dinner? A takeaway, because we’re far too tired to go out. £60 for three. Lovely.

Exhausted, but the washing won’t wait. One hour home and I’ve triumphantly got the first load in. Small victories.

🌧️ Welcome Back to Britain
Outside, it’s absolutely chucking it down. After 30-plus degrees, 15 suddenly feels positively Baltic, so the heating’s already on. Then the first load comes out, the tumble dryer goes on, there are towels draped over every radiator… and the electric meter is spinning like a Catherine wheel on Bonfire Night. 🎆

😴 The “Quick” Nap
Unless you splashed out on the flat beds, that long-haul flight has well and truly taken it out of you. You managed a couple of hours’ sleep on the plane, and stepped off with a crick in your neck, breath like a camel’s armpit and hair like a toilet brush that’s seen things. You tell yourself the coffee will keep you going until your usual bedtime. NOPE. You’re 8 hours out of sync.
“I’ll just have a quick nap.”
History’s greatest lie. 😂 Nobody has ever had a quick nap after a long-haul flight. You either wake up 40 minutes later feeling like you’ve been on the gin all afternoon, or six hours later with absolutely no idea what country you’re in. Either way, you feel ten times worse. The first load’s done, the second’s going in, the £60 takeaway’s on its way… and you’ve still got to pick up the dog and sort out the horses. AGHHHHH!

📖 CHAPTER TWO: The Next Morning (if you can call it that)

⏰ 3.45am
Wide awake. Of course you are. Your body thinks it’s lunchtime. By 4.15am you’ve given up, got up, and started the first of the next FIVE loads of washing. Cue the Catherine wheel all over again. 🎆 By now, my washing machine has passed more water than the Hoover Dam. And the ironing pile? See the photo. 😩 The shower’s calling. The horses are calling. The dog’s calling. Work’s calling. ARGHHHHH!

🛒 The Big Shop
Then there’s that empty fridge. Which raises the question nobody ever thinks about before they book: do you go away on payday, so you’ve got more spending money… and then survive the two weeks after you get back until the next one? Or do you come back on payday, and holiday on a shoestring? 😂
Either way, the holiday’s over. Time to be sensible again. Off to the supermarket we go.
Am I imagining it, or have prices gone up 50% while we were away for a fortnight? I walked in expecting my usual shop. I walked out £189 lighter… and that was WITH £31 off on my Clubcard! 😳
OK, a few different bits may have found their way into the trolley. A guava. A mango. A shedload of spices I’d never heard of a fortnight ago. I’m not entirely sure what half of them do. But for two glorious weeks in Malaysia, they felt like a whole new personality.
Oh, and remember that fuel light? Filling up the car is another £100 nobody warned you about!

And here’s the really irritating bit.
We complain about the jet lag.
We complain about the washing.
We complain about the weather.
We complain about the electric meter.
We complain about the shopping bill.
We complain about the cost of getting home.
We complain about being broke.
Yet before the suitcases have even made it back into the loft… one of us turns to the other and says:
“So… where shall we go next?”
And just like that, we’re looking at flights again. Because apparently, we learn absolutely nothing. 😂

Crete is one of our all-time favourite islands. Last time we hired a car and just explored. We had a Greek salad lunch overlooking Rethymnon’s harbour after a wander round its bustling shopping streets. 🚨 If Malaysia or Borneo has EVER been on your bucket list… stop scrolling. Seriously.

Kuala Lumpur’s glittering Petronas Towers. The 272 rainbow-painted steps up to the Batu Caves temple. Orangutans swinging down from the Borneo rainforest canopy. A sunset river cruise past villages on stilts. And a few days on Damai Beach to finish.

💚 And it’s the right way to see them. Semenggoh is a government-run conservation reserve that has rescued orphaned, injured and former pet orangutans since 1975. They’re not in cages: they roam free through more than 650 hectares of protected rainforest and choose whether to come down at feeding time. There’s no touching, holding or selfies with them, just watching them as nature intended. Because they’re free to come and go, sightings can’t be guaranteed, which is exactly how it should be.

There’s also a sunset cruise on the Sarawak River and a day at the award-winning Sarawak Cultural Village before you unwind on Damai Beach.

🌴 Cyprus — because it’s 5 o’clock and it’s already dark

It’s barely 5 o’clock. The street lights are on, the heating’s on, and you’ve just dashed in from the car in the drizzle.
