On 16th October 1886 a statue was unveiled of John Batchelor (1820–1883) who has been described as one of Cardiff's most notable citizens and ‘The Friend of Freedom’.

Born in Newport, Batchelor moved to Cardiff in his early twenties, where he set up as a timber and slate merchant in Cardiff docks. Batchelor then went into shipbuilding but was obstructed by the immensely powerful third Marquess of Bute who refused him permission to use the docks. Undeterred, Batchelor was instrumental in establishing the Mount Stuart Dry Dock.

As well as being a successful businessman, Batchelor was concerned about social issues and heavily involved in local politics, he was a radical Liberal councillor, served as Cardiff Mayor, a devoted Congregationalist responsible for the founding of a chapel in Charles Street, Chairman of the Cardiff School Board and a tireless anti-slavery campaigner.

His political views, brought him into regular conflict with the Tory establishment and the influential rich, such as the Butes and their supporters and this is thought to have contributed to the eventual collapse of his businesses in the 1870s. However, collections among his friends and the communities that he had supported over the years, helped him to survive and after his death, a statue of him was erected in The Hayes, Cardiff.

Saturday was a wonderful day of tours in Cardiff 🌞

We had four different groups with the runners and supporters from Sports Tours International, including our first ever tour in French! 🇫🇷

On top of that we had two different big public tours across the day as well. So overall there were 6 tours across the day, with 5 different guides, in 2 different languages, to around 150 people.

The Cardiff Half Marathon is such an international event now that it brings visitors from every corner of the world, all excited to experience our great city.

Well done to everyone who ran on Sunday🏃 and hopefully everybody enjoyed the race and their time in the Welsh capital 🎽🏅🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

This Sunday is the Cardiff Half Marathon, always one of the busiest and most enjoyable weekends of the year in Cardiff 🏃

If you're in town for the race then we have extra tours taking place across the weekend. The Cardiff city public tour takes place on Friday at 11am (2 Oct) and twice on Saturday (3 Oct) at 11am and 2pm. All are welcome, so why not join a tour and learn a bit about Cardiff and Wales before running around the city on Sunday 🏰

Same applies if you're in town for Wales v Denmark on Sunday night 🇩🇰

Today marks Owain Glyndŵr Day - a celebration of the man widely regarded as the last native-born Prince of Wales.

The day marks the anniversary of the start of his uprising against English rule in 1400 – a rebellion that lasted around 15 years.

Places across Wales still bear connections to Glyndŵr, and you can follow in his footsteps along Glyndŵr’s Way, a 135-mile national trail through mid-Wales.

Heledd Fychan MS, Cabinet Minister for Culture and Sport, said he was "woven into the fabric of Welsh identity, and his influence can still be felt across the country."

📣 Our 2,000th tour took place yesterday, on 8 September 2026! 🎉

Following 8 and a half years of tours in Cardiff (and a few in Swansea), it is a lovely milestone to finally reach and one I've been looking forward to for a while 2️⃣0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣

This one has been a long time coming ⏳ Between lots of rain, increasing heat waves, Covid, and maybe a little bit of increased competition sometimes, it's taken a lot of effort and persistence to make it to this landmark 💪

Tour number 2,000 was incredibly enjoyable too, thankfully landing on a day with a very nice group of enthusiastic people and with even some sunshine too. Thanks to everyone who joined the tour and made it such a memorable afternoon, and thanks for posing for a cheesy photo too 📸

And thanks to everyone who has made this possible over the years too, as I certainly have not personally conducted every single one of these tours myself (just about 1,730 or so), so thanks to Andrew, Remo, Sal, Griff and others who have delivered tours expertly over the years. And of course to all the participants from around the world, a literal A-Z of Afghanistan to Zimbabwe and everything you can think of in between 🇦🇫🇮🇪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇿🇼

🚶Tours continue of course, as they always do. The regular Cardiff city public guided tour takes place multiple times per week all year round, while private tours are always possible on request. Other tours are also possible, be it of Cardiff Bay, Swansea, Mumbles, Cardiff's Arcades, Cardiff's darker history or even of filming locations of Doctor Who 📺

I tend to prefer saving things like this for the tours themselves, but Cardiff's secret Cyberman has been more widely known about for a while now anyway.... 🤖

Right in the heart of Cardiff city centre, in St John the Baptist Church, there is a little bit of Doctor Who lore that is subtly hidden in plain sight. It's been there for 20 years, but many pass by the church daily without ever realising 📅

Our city isn't just great for residents - plenty of the things we enjoy attract visitors too. 🙌

Camping retailer Pitchup examined 50 UK cities, assessing destinations based on the ease and affordability of nearby outdoor escapes. They pointed how from Cardiff, you can get to a whopping 713 camping, glamping, and touring sites within a 90-minute journey. 🤯🌳

So, Cardiff makes a brilliant base for tourists looking to explore South Wales and its beautiful walks, but the city itself has so much to offer. We've got such vibrant foodie, nightlife and independent shopping scenes, and it's easy to explore as the place is so walkable. 🚶

Great name for a portaloo company! 🚽

Womanby Street in Cardiff is already full of Doctor Who filming locations as it is, but recently spotted this alternative TARDIS during a busy day in the city. Probably should have used blue though 🔵

Cardiff city centre is littered with dozens of actual filming locations from the world of Doctor Who spanning the last 21 years, so why not join us to find them on a tour of the city.

There are a couple of public, group Doctor Who tours taking place this month, on Saturday, 8 August and Sunday, 30 August, both at 1:30pm. All are welcome. Prices vary by age.
