Hello from Daniel and Jamie 👋

We're the hosts behind Ty Cwtch. After staying in lots of different places on our travels, we realised that comfort and a sense of belonging are what make a stay memorable, so we set out to create a space that feels like home, with our own style and attention to detail.

We wanted it to work for everyone too. We thought about older relatives, contractors and business travellers, which is why there's step-free ramped access at the rear and a low-level shower. Our thinking has always been to design for the minority so that it works for the majority.

Welsh word of the week: cwtch 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Pronounced roughly "kutch" (rhymes with "butch"), it means a cuddle or a warm embrace, and also a cosy little nook where you feel safe and snug. It was added to the Concise Oxford English Dictionary in 2005 and was voted the nation's favourite Welsh word in a 2007 poll.

Which is exactly why we chose it for our home. Ty is Welsh for house, and our bungalow is small, snug and made for settling in. So Ty Cwtch is, more or less, the cosy little house.

Things you might not know about Cardiff Castle 🏰

The first Roman fort here was probably built around AD 55. The Norman motte is the largest in Wales. During the Second World War, tunnels inside the castle walls could shelter up to 1,800 people. And the Clock Tower is decorated with statues of planets and celestial figures, added when the 3rd Marquess of Bute had architect William Burges remodel the castle in the Victorian era.

Calan Gaeaf hapus! 🎃

Before Halloween, there was Calan Gaeaf, the Welsh festival that marks the first day of winter on 1 November, with the night before known as Nos Galan Gaeaf. It was the end of the old Celtic year and the shift from summer to winter.

Traditionally, bonfires were lit once it got dark, and people hurried home before the fire died down, for fear of the hwch ddu gwta, the tailless black sow. Games like apple bobbing were part of the fun too.

Whatever you're up to on Saturday, we hope you have a great one. Do you carve a pumpkin or go for the old Welsh traditions? x

Christmas at Bute Park is back 🎄✨

From 19 November to 31 December, Wales's largest light trail returns to the heart of the capital with a brand new route, split into four themed areas: Joy, Hope, Wonder and Magic. There's street food from local traders and a heated, Alpine-style cabin bar if you fancy a warming drink.

It runs from 4.15pm to 8.30pm each evening, and tickets are sold through the organisers, so it's worth booking ahead.

Planning to go this year? x

Save the date ❄️🎄

Cardiff's Winter Wonderland returns on Thursday 12 November and runs until Sunday 3 January (closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day). The city's Christmas lights are switched on the same day too.

This year it's split across two spots:
⛸️ Cardiff Castle grounds: the undercover ice rink, the outdoor ice walk and new Bavarian curling
🎡 City Hall lawn: the Giant Wheel and the family fairground

Top tip: skating tickets have to be booked online in advance, so you can't just turn up on the day.

Planning a festive weekend in Cardiff? We go all out with the Christmas decorations at Ty Cwtch (just ask last year's guests!). Check dates and book direct at cardiffshorttermlet.co.uk x
