As we celebrate the return of summer, one of our locals (as he was born in the county of Cumberland), Robin Oliver, has penned a few lines titled ‘Summer in Cumberland’ ahead of his new online exhibition ‘Echoes’ scheduled for later this month in celebration of our flower-filled landscapes. He accompanies the words copied for us with one of his still-life images of some of our familiar meadow treasures.

Summer in Cumberland.

In June, the earth dons her vibrant attire,
As wildflowers blossom, a sight to inspire.
In meadows and woodlands, where beauty takes flight,
A tapestry woven of colours so bright.

The Common Poppy dances in the warm breeze,
While Meadow Buttercups sway with such ease.
Foxgloves stand tall, with their bells ringing clear,
And Oxeye Daisies, a true sign of cheer.

The Birdsfoot Trefoil, with its delicate grace,
And Meadow Cranesbill, nature's soft embrace.
Amidst the lush green, the Red and White Clover,
Dog Rose and Honeysuckle, secrets covered over.

Meadowsweet whispers where the wild things play,
While Cow Parsley flourishes, gracing the way.
Ragged Robin's charm in the sun's gentle gleam,
And Purple Loosestrife flows like a dream.

Oh, Flowers of Geraniaceae, a lovely throng,
Geraniums, Pelargoniums, and Erodiums are strong.
In the heart of June’s splendour, they weave, and they twine,
A symphony painted by nature’s design.

Comprising of Jack McNeill (clarinet and bass clarinet, percussion and whistles), Eleanor McIntosh (soprano), and Kate Halsall (piano and harmonium), The Almanac returns to The Fratry Hall at Carlisle Cathedral on Friday 19 June.

A musical stirring that combines instrumental music with poetry, song, found texts, improvisations, and a certain trademark creative curiosity.

This performance sees some of Cumbria’s finest chamber musicians come together to continue to forge a musical tradition. It has a thread woven through new music and reimagined classics, a turning of the year, an Almanac for Cumbria, a book of days.

Carlisle has a unique story to tell with regards to drinking and getting drunk. Exploring the State Management Scheme, a unique and fascinating part of Carlisle’s history, ‘Under The Influence’ guided walking tours by Discover Lakeland take place once a month until November.

During the First World War, a vast ammunitions factory lay to the north - its thirsty workers besieging the pubs of Carlisle every night. In 1916, the Government took action and bought up all of the city's pubs, off-licences and breweries, and the so-called 'Carlisle Experiment' began as an attempt to discourage people from excessive boozing.
