On this day in 1819 the Tewitfield to Kendal stretch of the Lancaster Canal was opened. By this time, nearly 43 miles of the canal had been in regular use for 22 years, since the official opening date of 22nd November 1797. A number of more recent road developments, including the M6 and the A590, sadly mean that this northerly stretch of the waterway network has been mostly non-navigable for some considerable time. ๐ค
It wasn't until until 1826, with the opening of a branch to Glasson Dock, that the Lancaster Canal as we know it today was completed! ๐
