In the Scottish Highlands, the word “thrawn” means “stubborn,” but in a good way. It’s a virtuous struggle to make the most of what’s available. Professional snowboarder Lesley McKenna was raised on thrawn, and she has spent her life pushing the boundaries of her sport while advocating for the people and the place that shaped her.

Visitors to Scotland will usually land in either Glasgow or Edinburgh, or enter the country from England in the south and make a beeline for these cities or the Highlands. We have all heard about the Isle of Skye, the island distilleries and the majesty of Edinburgh castle. But just south of all these famous Scottish wonders you’ll find landscapes, castles, forests and experiences to rival anything further north.

The best reasons to visit the often overlooked southwestern region of Scotland.

Filmed in all four seasons across the Cateran Ecomuseum, ‘From Deep Time to Our Time’ encourages people to rethink the ways they travel. It features the people who live in the ‘museum without walls’ and its nature, with drone footage of the spectacular Perthshire and Angus scenery.

Collaborating with communities, the Cateran Ecomuseum provides inspirational experiences through nature, culture and heritage. The ecomuseum is situated on the Highland Boundary Fault, the most important geological division in Scotland, close to the cities of Perth and Dundee.

A great review of Dunrobin Castle from Heather Pottie

"My husband and I visited Dunrobin Castle in August and it was one of the Best Tourist Attractions we have visited.

Dunrobin Castle is the most northerly of Scotland's great houses and the largest in the Northern Highlands with 189 rooms. It is also one of Britain's oldest continuously inhabited houses dating back to the early 1300s, home to the Earls and later, the Dukes of Sutherland.

The Castle which resembles a French Chateau with its towering conical Spires, has seen the architectural influences of Sir Charles Barry, who designed the Houses of Parliament, and Scotland’s own Sr Robert Lorimer. The Castle was used as a Naval hospital during the First World War and as a boy’s boarding school from 1965 to 1972.

Situated on the east coast of the Northern Highlands overlooking the Moray Firth, just north of the villages of Golspie and Dornoch (famous for it’s cathedral and Royal Dornoch Golf Club).

The tour of the Castle was such an experience. Their one way system made it very easy to follow.

The earliest part of the building dates from around 1275.
We took a self guided tour through the state rooms on the first floor before making our way through the smaller rooms in the older parts of the castle

We also had a walk around the beautiful gardens and Victorian Museum.

We then sat and watched the Falcon Display on the Castle lawn which was exciting, seeing them fly so low, just above our heads and catching food in mid- air.

The display features a Perigrine and Gyrfalcon as well as Harris Hawks.

The Falconer explained different hunting methods used by owls, hawks and falcons in a series of fascinating aerobatic displays. We had the opportunity to take many photos.

We had lunch in the cafe. Well worth a visit too"

Thanks for sharing Heather 👍
