January 2018 saw the opening of the exhibition 'The Last Ulster Schooner' at the Ulster Transport Museum to mark the 125th anniversary of the launch of the Result.

Many of the photographs and artefacts were on public display for the first time. The opening was attended by Sarah Sankey, whose father Captain Peter Welch was the last owner and operator of the Result.

'The Last Ulster Schooner' exhibition remains on display today at the Ulster Transport Museum; well worth a look alongside Result herself!

What kind of heritage events and experiences would like to see on board?

Our project proposes to bring the last Carrickfergus built ship, the Result, back to the town as a history attraction and community event hub.

We already have received a lot of feedback from a great number of local people both online and in person - however if you haven't already make sure to have your say! Do you agree with the suggestions listed or have any new suggestions to make?

Carrickfergus Shipyard 1870

Paul Rodgers took ownership of the yard in 1870 when this picture was taken. A wooden barque has been hauled out for repair on the patent slip. Behind the cutter yacht Venture is under construction.

The Venture was ordered by then MP for Carrickfergus Marriot Dalway. Rodgers built a few well renowned yachts during his career.

Today the shipyard site is now Legg Park.

Victorian & Modern Day Shipbuilding Collide

Following her purchase by the Ulster Transport Museum restoration work was carried out in the 1970s to return the Result to her original as built in 1893 specifications - later additions like larger cargo hatches, engine and propellor removed.

This work was carried out in Belfast's Harland & Wolff shipyard with the Victorian schooner overshadowed by the iconic Samson & Goliath cranes and the large building dock. A far cry from the modest Victorian yard of Paul Rodgers in Carrickfergus where Result was built.

The last two Saturdays the Result has been wonderfully featured in the Belfast Newsletter; and as a follow up today’s Newsletter looks at the fascinating story of the Mary B. Mitchell.

Mary B. Mitchell was built in Carrickfergus Shipyard in 1892 and just like the Result served in the First World War as a Q-Ship!
