to a rather moody close up post from circa 1912 looking through the historic gatehouse arch from the Square toward Cavendish Street. The Cartmel Priory gatehouse dates back to the 14th century and was likely built between 1330-1340.

A 3hr pootle from Near Sawrey, round Moss Eccles Tarn (Beatrix Potter country!) and Claife Heights. Lots of tracks between trees; muddy, mostly cloudy on this day, and a bit windy…. But no rain !!!

Arnside is a lovely spot for a wander, whatever the weather. Watch out for the infamous bore, when the klaxon sounds to warn you of the second fastest incoming tide in the country! Lovely shops and bistros to browse round, a pier to sit at the end of, the wonderful railway bridge across the sands … and free roadside parking ! …. And that’s without the Knott to walk up for views, and the nearby RSPB Leighton Moss bird reserve.

It’s ages since we last took the Windermere Ferry, but it doesn’t half take a chunk off a journey when you’ve walked round the Far / Near Sawrey area and want to call in at Bowness or Windermere….

Hello from one of the highest racecourses in the world! Just thought we’d wish you Happy New Year from Nuwara Eliya in Sri Lanka. The course here was founded by the wealthy, privileged elite back in days of Empire. They also established an area that became known as Little England, which continues to boggle the mind today. There are parts where you really do have to remind yourself, you’re many thousands of miles away. The racetrack is 9furlongs, so slightly longer than Cartmel, and sits 6,129feet above sea level, making it one of the highest anywhere. The immediate surroundings are not quite as quaint nor serene as Cartmel. But the country in which it lies is truly beautiful, and its people as welcoming as any on the planet, and more so than many !
