Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu is celebrated in Assam as the end of the harvest season and the cold, harsh winters and it also marks the winter solstice and celebrates the days getting longer with the sun proceeding on its northward journey. This festival is marked by preparing of huts in the fields and then having a bonfire at sunrise and offering prayers and preparation of different types of sweets and rice cakes.

Located 130 km from Guwahati, Assam are the archaeological ruins of Sri Suryapahar, references of which are found in the 10th century Kalika Purana. The popular belief is that 99999 Shiva Lingas were engraved here by Vyasa in order to build up a second Kashi. Another important significance of this site is that it is a religious confluence of 3 religions, Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism as is evident from the sculptures and other relics.
