We bet you didn't know that...

Chester’s Roman gateway was hiding beneath the medieval Eastgate!

In 1768, the medieval gate was demolished to make way for a more practical gateway that could deal with the demands of traffic. However, as the Norman masonry was removed, the remains of the Roman gate were revealed underneath!

Welsh traveller and naturalist Thomas Pennant witnessed the discovery, describing two huge stone arches and a central pillar dividing the road. Between the arches even stood a statue of Mars, the Roman god of war.

The Roman gate was sadly dismantled that same year — but its story lives on!
