On Cheshire Day, we honour the legacy beneath our feet…

Archaeologists in Norfolk, England have uncovered a remarkable artifact linked to one of the most dramatic uprisings in ancient Britain. A Celtic war trumpet, known as a carnyx, may be connected to the legendary revolt led by Queen Boudica against Roman rule.

The carnyx was no ordinary instrument. Crafted from metal and designed to project sound across great distances, it was used to coordinate troops and intimidate enemies on the battlefield. Its distinctive shape, often ending in an animal like head, made both its sound and appearance unforgettable.

Boudica’s revolt, which took place around 60–61 CE, was one of the most significant challenges to Roman authority in Britain. Leading a coalition of tribes, she launched attacks on Roman strongholds, creating a powerful moment of resistance that has echoed through history.

The discovery of this trumpet provides a tangible connection to that era. It suggests how sound and symbolism played a role in warfare, helping unite fighters and strengthen morale during conflict.

Artifacts like this bring history closer to the present. They allow us to imagine the noise, tension, and energy of ancient battlefields in ways written records alone cannot fully capture.

Even after centuries, the echo of that resistance still remains.

Sometimes history is not just seen.

It is heard.

Happy International Women’s Day!

The Roman Empire wasn’t built by emperors and soldiers alone — many women played vital roles in the communities that grew around Roman forts like Chester’s Deva Victrix.

Some historical sources even suggest that women fought in the auxiliary units on the empire’s frontiers!

Next time you walk through Chester, remember the women who helped shape life here nearly 2,000 years ago.

What a fantastic talk yesterday for the Chester Lecture Society at the Grosvenor Museum!

Thrax (Cellan Harston) took us all back in time with his talk on “The Life of a Legionary Soldier,” joined by Caecilius Avitus (Alfie). It was great to see so many people discovering what life was really like for a Roman soldier stationed in Deva Victrix (Chester).
