La Rochelle is a city in the south-west of France, located on the Atlantic Ocean. A fishing and trading center since the 12th century; its architectural heritage bears witness to its past: the old town with its medieval half-timbered houses, Renaissance architecture, the old port and two majestic towers.

Renamed the castle of Sleeping Beauty, the Château de la Roche Courbon was built in the 15th century on a rocky outcrop. It was transformed into a country mansion during the 17th century and it is surrounded by some magnificent French-style gardens.

A DAY ON A RIVER CRUISE

COLOGNE

We slip our mooring early this morning and our ship resumes its voyage downstream as you enjoy another fine breakfast with views of pretty riverside towns, backed by the rolling volcanic hills for which the area is renowned. Passing the last vineyards and half-timbered houses around the pretty town of Linz, it’s not long before we reach the railway bridge at Remagen, captured intact towards the end of the Second World War, thereby arguably shortening the war in Germany.
Not long after, we draw in to the heart of Cologne, in the shadow of the magnificent dual-spired Gothic cathedral for which the city is so famous. It’s a truly monumental building, taking over 600 years to build and featuring myriad religious and art treasures and perhaps the most intricate stained glass windows in Europe.
After lunch, we join a local guide for an informative tour of the city, with time to explore its tree-lined squares and perhaps visit one of its traditional bars, many of which still brew their own b**r.
After dinner, enjoy a final digestif in the bar while reflecting on the memories made on this wonderful cruise through the romantic heartlands of Germany’s most iconic rivers.

I want to thank Susan for booking our first ever cruise on board Marella Explorer 2. Susan chose and booked our cabin as she’s an experienced cruiser and we trusted her choice we were not disappointed as our cabin was fabulous. She also helped with the flights and booking seats on the plane. Nothing was too much trouble. Susan even messaged to make sure everything was ok as she knew I was anxious about feeling sea sick. Barbados Cruise Port

Barbados is a relatively small island - 21 miles long and no more than 14 miles wide - all attractions are close to the port, allowing the cruise traveler to enjoy a leisurely day at a laid back pace.

One of the best things for me is the beaches the sand, as it derives from coral it has different properties to other sands, its soft and warm not hot and doesn't stick to you.

We visited The Boat Yard in Carlisle Bay a $5 taxi drive from the port. The Boatyard offers a Beach Package which is great for both cruise visitors looking for a relaxing or fun day in Barbados, whether you want a relaxing day on the beach, enjoy a day of watersports or a boat trip to snorkel.

We loved the boat trip (which is included in the entry price) that allows you to snorkel in an area to see turtles and a wreck two very different sites both offer excellent sealife.

Here you can enjoy rope swinging, the iceberg climb and slide, an ocean trampoline and beach volleyball. Jetskis, banana boat rides and glass bottom boat tours are available for hire right off the beach.
The onsite bar and restaurant keeps you well watered and fed throughout the day.

When we arrived back at the port we avoided the touriest bars and enjoyed drinks and snacks a little bar for locals.

If you are flying back from Barbados a definitely recommend a trip with airport drop off if your ship's deparkation is early.

A DAY ON A RIVER CRUISE

STRASBOURG

This morning we cruise gently upstream, passing through two spectacular locks, whose elaborate engineering never ceases to fascinate. Why not find a comfortable chair and catch up on some reading, play chess or watch the rolling kaleidoscope of scenery from the Sun Deck?
We soon arrive in France and moor in Strasbourg, capital of the Alsace region. This afternoon we have a walking tour of its picturesque Old Town, bisected by canals and made up of a maze of narrow streets lined with timber-framed houses and sculptured portals. Unforgettable sites include the stupendous Gothic Notre-Dame Cathedral, multi-towered Ponts Couverts – covered bridges – and the pretty Petite France quarter of pastel-coloured former artisans’ houses lining the canals. Don’t be surprised if you’re tempted to linger a while in a typical Alsatian café to sample some of the region’s world-famous wines – a crisp Riesling or that particular speciality of Alsace, spicy Gewürztraminer.
