This is Percy Topliss who was born at Chesterfield in 1896. He would grow up to be one of England's most notorious criminals. At the age of 11 he was given the birch at Mansfield for illegally obtaining two suits, but this was no deterrent to Percy who later went on to be convicted of attempted r**e. Other crimes followed including becoming a racketeer and impersonating an army Officer. His downward spiral continued until he was finally on the run after committing murder. He was killed in present day Cumbria in a shoot-out with the police at the age of just 23. If you want to read more stories like this you'll find them in 'Olde Nottinghamshire Punishments' (available from Amazon and major bookstores).

The rumours are true and there is to be a ghost tour on Saturday January 29th. To reserve your tickets you will need to ring the castle on 01246 822844 or call in to the visitors centre when open at the weekends. Remember this is an adults only event and numbers really are limited. Spread the word.

Inspector Hopkinson's Discovery.

Try this for something different. Available in paperback or e-book on Amazon. See if you can work out whether the jury came to the correct verdict or not. Ideal for anyone interested in real crime.

By 1895, the spectre of Jack the Ripper had begun to fade until one man brought the memory of it flooding back… This is the true story of one night’s tragedy and the effect it would have on many lives for years to come.

In the early hours of 11th August 1895 Inspector Christopher Hopkinson was awoken from his slumber by a frantic hammering on his lodgings door.

Dressing quickly he hurried downstairs to be confronted, in the dim light of the courtyard, by a man, almost naked, his throat slashed, carrying a small child in burning nightclothes.

Christopher Hopkinson was immediately thrust into a
nightmare of brutal murder, arson and intrigue, from which there seemed no end.

With the seeds of one family’s spiral of destruction set as far afield as conflict- torn Imperial India, and at home in the rapidly changing England of Queen Victoria, this is a true tale which gripped the nation.

The sensational trial that followed these murders was beset by controversy and uncertainty. It is up to you to decide whether the original jury reached the correct verdict.

Quite a few people who haven't been able to get on the Original Ghost Tour at Bolsover castle have asked me if there is any way they can get to know some of the ghost stories. 'Haunted Mansfield' has a chapter that tells some of the tales of ghostly-goings-on at the castle (as well as Hardwick Old Hall and Sutton Scarsdale Hall). You can get a copy from Bolsover castle visitors centre (limited stock) or by going on Amazon.
There are very few tickets left for one of the ghost tours on November 13th so be prepared to miss out if you don't get them now by calling the castle (01246 822844). Anyone who has managed to book their tickets please turn up well in advance of the start time as late comers might not be able to join the tour. The cafe will be open so you can wait in the warm while having a hot drink.

175 years ago on the evening of 7th December 1845 John Platts murdered George Collis in his butchers shop in the Shambles (now part of the Royal Oak), but his accomplices were never brought to trial. One died before the trial and the third was never identified. Before his ex*****on Platts made two confessions, both contradictory to the evidence, and so the the name of the third man remains a mystery.

This drawing of Platts was done while his trial took place.

Today marks the one hundred and twenty-fifth anniversary of this man claiming to have killed four people within the space of a few minutes, but did he really do it, and if he did was he aware of his actions? To see the full story of Henry Wright read 'Inspector Hopkinson's Discovery'... a true tale of arson, murder and a trial surrounded by intrigue and disagreement.
