The park of the Fraeylemaborg is a national monument, where elements of French Baroque and English landscape style have been preserved side by side. Along winding paths, past ponds, garden ornaments, and remarkable trees, you walk ever further into the woodland park. Long, straight avenues lined with oaks and beeches form sightlines to the manor house, the 13th-century Tower of Slochteren, and the surrounding landscape.

Stinzen plants such as the rare Turkish lily, rhododendrons, and azaleas add color. The Juglans Nigra, or Black Walnut, behind the manor house originates from North America and was cultivated here from seed 200 years ago. It is now the largest and oldest of its kind in the Netherlands.

De Wiersse is a historic house and garden located in the east of the Netherlands. It belonged to the same family since the seventeenth century. In 1893 it came into the hands of jonkheer Victor de Stuers. De Stuers was the founder of monument preservation in the Netherlands and constructed the Rijks museum in Amsterdam. Shortly after the death of Victor de Stuers in1916, his daughter met and married the English/Irish Major, W.E. Gatacre, who was an amateur gardener and began restructuring the 300-hectare estate in the style of the grand estates and vistas that inspired him from growing up in England and Ireland. Lakes, bridges, clipped yew hedges, fountains and statues were introduced. In 1963, their son, E.V. Gatacre, took over the estate and with his English wife, Laura Gatacre-Dru, they continued to develop the gardens. In 1977, the gardens were opened to the public and in 2007 the entire estate was transferred to a charity to ensure its continued existence for future generations to enjoy.

I’m lucky enough to be able to stop by the Rijks museum garden quite often. The school garden is located on the west side of the museum and a different school gets to sow, plant and harvest the garden for an entire year. Vegetables grown here are used in dishes at the Rijks restaurant. Else where in the garden, Buxus parterres are planted with an array of perennials including Acanthus, Achillea, Cosmos, Anemone, Perovskia and fabulously fragrant roses. Bronze statues are scattered throughout the garden including Mercury & Psyche, a copy commissioned for the Rijks garden in 1890. Plenty of cool places to sit under the trees or by the fountain 😎
