Wealthy American Major Lawrence Johnston, purchased Hidcote Manor in 1907 after a long search for a suitable home to settle in England. Over the following decades he created a garden based on the principles of the Arts & Craft movement popular in the early 20th century. He was a gregarious gardener and collected rare plants from all over the world to cultivate at Hidcote. It’s been more than 20 years since my first visit and I am still blown away by the great plantsmanship and artistry of Hidcote. Well worth a visit if you’re in the Cotswolds.

Discovered a beautiful wild flower meadow (heading to the beach) on the island of Texel. At its peak in early June with drifts of Papaver, Leucanthemum vulgare, Centaurea cyanus, Phacelia tanacetifolia and Malvia arborea.

Since I have been living in the Netherlands, I occasionally help some friends restore their beautiful garden to its former glory. The garden is situated alongside a pretty canal in Hillegom, it is scattered with antique statues and urns set against a backdrop of Rhododendron, Camellias, Hydrangeas and pleached Plane trees.

Hiking in the mountains above Menton, I discovered this wonderful ancient garden perched on a jagged outcrop above the village of St. Agnes, located 750 m above sea level. Ruins of a 9th century Chateau dominate the village and on terraces below it, an interesting medieval garden can be found, which is maintained and managed by a local trust of artisans and a full time gardener. Each garden terrace is sectioned off into parterres, fruit trees and vegetables. Box topiary adds a structural element with hedges of Lavender and Santolina. Despite the altitude, sunny days are frequent with distant views of the Mediterranean Sea far below. Menton area enjoys the best winter temperatures in France. I visited the gardens on a sunny January morning, the first three photos show the garden at its peak, taken in June, however there is a special beauty to the bareness of the garden in January.
