The snake benches of Charterhouse Square. The ironwork on the benches is in the form of beautifully sculpted snakes, possibly referring to the nearby St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical School, since serpents are often a symbol of medicine.

The snakes also bear the shield of the Carthusian order, the order that occupied the Charterhouse from 1371 until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1530s. The order was originally founded in the Chartreuse mountains of France in the 11th century. The shield shows a globe, a cross and seven stars, which represent the order's founders St Bruno and six other holy men.
