How much is this gold bar worth?

A 'London Good Delivery' gold bar in the Bank of England Museum. If you put your hand through the hole, you can try to lift it. It's surprisingly heavy.

These bullion bars weigh approximately 400 Troy ounces or 12.4kg. At current gold prices, its value is around £1.3 million.

The Bank of England vaults have around 400,000 gold bars like this, giving a total value of c.£520 billion.

It was a great pleasure to show my old friend, his wife and sister in law some of the highlights of the City of London yesterday. They were visiting from Australia and this was the first time I'd met his wife and sister in law, for whom this was their first insight into the City's history and idiosyncracies.

There are still places left on my Eclectic Clerkenwell tour today at 11am.

St Thomas Becket, a 12th century Archbishop of Canterbury, was famously murdered in Canterbury Cathedral, but he was a Londoner, born on Cheapside.

In today’s City of London there are many physical symbols of his life, death and legacy. More than 850 years after his life was so brutally ended, his wider legacy still has an enduring and significant impact in London.
