Visit us to see contemporary craft exhibitions, buy stunning gifts in the Craft Shop, take part in workshops and educational opportunities or hire a room for your event. In our main exhibition space, we present an exciting program of exhibitions from nationally recognised makers as well as focussing on work by Lancashire based designers; exhibited work includes textiles, ceramics, jewellery, glass

and metalwork (see our website for more details). We also exhibit work from community groups within the Education Gallery. To compliment our main exhibition space, we also offer a craft retail area where we have a large selection of unique handmade gifts at affordable prices.

Turn old textiles into something beautiful! Join local artist Emma Clarke at Platform Gallery for a FREE drop-in coiled basket workshop on Saturday 30 August. Bring along a piece of old clothing or fabric and discover a creative new skill. Suitable for adults and children ages 8+ (with an accompanying adult).

The gallery, which is next to the town’s railway station, is open Sundays until Sunday 30 August, 11am-4pm. Note, workshops end at 3pm and where materials are limited may wrap up sooner. Children must be always accompanied by a responsible adult.

Bernie Blackburn a signwriter from Preston brings the walls to life with his bold works on reclaimed wood, demonstrating skill and processes unchanged for centuries. As well as his finished signs, Bernie has also given us an insight into his processes by providing a selection of his tools.

Get involved in our Summer Sunday Events and join Laura Dent on Sunday 23rd August for an embossing workshop between 11.30 and 3pm. This activity is suitable for adults and children alike. The sessions are all drop in. So, no need to book!

Spotlight On...
Basketmaker and sculptor Cherry Chung works with willow, bark and rush, creating woven forms that connect contemporary practice with one of our earliest examples of craft.
"Basketmaking is one of the oldest handcrafting skills. We are in an age of high speed, high tech, high consumption and high waste, and I can't help but feel that these slow and mindful skills remain important for humanity as individuals and as a species. The skilled basketmaker will be able to balance technique, spacing, and weight of material and bring it all together into an aesthetically pleasing and structurally strong form. The process starts with selecting material, matching weight to the intended method and anticipating what the thickness of, say, a willow rod needs to be at any given point in the process. Basketmaking is a connection between the fingertips and the eye, natural materials vary wildly, all the willows have their own nature, variations happen even from year to year, and so being able to feel how the rod is moving under your fingertips and knowing how to manipulate it is a mastered skill.

Traditional shoemaker Daniel Nelson, based in Settle, represents a craft that has been rooted in skilled handwork for centuries. Through the careful construction of handmade footwear, Daniel continues a tradition that values durability, quality and craftsmanship over mass production. His work demonstrates the enduring importance of specialist skills and the unique character that can only be achieved through making by hand. His inclusion in Hand & Heritage highlights the role of traditional makers in preserving practical craft knowledge for future generations.

This Sunday (16th August) sees Karen from redcurrant glass join us for a free sgraffito workshop as part of our Summer Sunday Events programme. Sgraffito technique involves transferring a design from paper to glass using toxic free paint and scratching with a scraping tool. Your design will then be taken to the studio to be fired in a kiln so you will need to revisit the gallery in 2-3 weeks to collect your final piece.

This activity is suitable for adults and children of school age with a little help from their grown-ups. The sessions are all drop in. So, no need to book!

Calling all Spinners, Knitters and Crocheters!
We are thrilled to announce that we are currently stocking local 100% Wool from Barton Wool.
We have a selection of beautiful materials for your next project- from Jacob Silver fleece to 50g balls of double knit and lots more.
We also have ready-made items such as exquisite hats and headbands.

Barton Wool creates a range of handcrafted products using wool from its own flock in Blackburn, Lancashire. By managing every stage from fleece to finished piece, Barton Wool showcases the close connection between local materials, sustainable production and traditional making practices. Their work celebrates Lancashire's rich textile heritage while demonstrating the continuing value of working with natural fibres.
