Enjoy a good day out in and around Durham visiting Finchale Priory before enjoying Durham Cathedral

Finchale Priory is one of those places that feels like it’s been dropped into a quiet bend of the River Wear on purpose - tucked away, but never really hidden.

It started with St Godric, the hermit who chose this spot for a life of prayer, long before the monks moved in. Durham’s Benedictines later turned it into a priory and a proper little retreat from the noise of the city - and you can still see how the layout was built around peace, routine, and getting on with it.

From above, the ruins read like a floorplan in stone - cloister, church, walls, and doorways that still make you follow the route, even with the roof long gone.

Have you been to Finchale - or got any memories of it (school trips, Sunday walks, or getting lost on the riverside path)?

Enjoy a day out following the Castles of Northumbria and head for Bamburgh Castle before head back to Jasmine Cottage and relaxing in your hot tub

Bamburgh Castle - the sort of place that doesn’t need selling. It’s just there, planted on the rock, making everything around it feel like the supporting cast.

Long before it became the castle people know, this headland was a power base for the old Northumbrian world - a stronghold looking out over sea lanes, borders, and whatever trouble was brewing next.

From the air you get the full logic of it - high ground, hard edges, and that endless sweep of beach that makes you realise why they picked this spot in the first place. If you’re building something to last, you don’t do it half-hearted.

Hownsgill viaduct is an easy walk from Jasmine Cottage
Thanks to Northern Perspectives for this excellent photo

Sunny summer days at Hownsgill Viaduct - the sort of place that makes you stop mid-walk and just stare for a minute.

It was built in 1857-58, designed by Thomas Bouch, to carry the old mineral railway over the gill - 12 arches, about 700ft long, and roughly 175ft up at its highest point.

Before this went in, they didn’t even have a bridge here - wagons were hauled up and down steep inclines in cradles using a stationary engine, with Robert Stephenson involved in the earlier set-up. This viaduct was the “right, we’re doing this properly” fix.

Now it’s walkers and bikes instead of wagons and ore - same crossing, different graft.
