A piece of Crewe’s railway past, right in the middle of town 🚂

These two steel locomotive wheels, joined by a coupling axle and raised on a high plinth, were installed in the Victoria Centre as a tribute to Crewe’s legacy as a town built on rail.

Alongside a smaller driving wheel, the sculpture marks Crewe’s place in history as a major centre for locomotive manufacturing, which is a nod to the thousands who worked at Crewe Works and helped power the nation’s railways.

Recently restored with support from ASDA and the centre’s owners, it’s now looking better than ever.

Crewe’s history is hiding in plain sight 👀

Right in the heart of town stands the Grade II-listed War Memorial, a striking bronze sculpture of Britannia created to honour local lives lost in the First World War.

Unveiled in 1924, it shows Britannia holding a trident and a palm leaf, standing on chains as a symbol of strength and sacrifice. The limestone base carries names from both world wars, as well as the Falklands and Gulf conflicts - and it's one of the few civic memorials in the UK to include civilian names too.

Originally located in Market Square, the memorial was moved to its current spot and rededicated in 2014, giving Memorial Square its name.

Want to find out more? The free Crewe Heritage Walking Tours, led by Councillor Ben Wye, start right here at the statue and take you on a fascinating 90-minute journey through the town’s past. They run throughout September as part of Heritage Open Days. Pre-booking is advised via the Crewe Town Council website.

From a ten-year-old apprentice to a Crewe town centre business owner - that’s the story of Errol from Razor Men’s Grooming 💈

Razor Men’s Grooming might only have opened in 2022, but owner Errol’s been perfecting his work since he was just ten. After starting his barbering business in Nantwich, he moved to Crewe town centre to make the most of the busier location.

It now offers services that include wet shaves, dry cuts, skin fades, beard trims, buzz cuts and more.

And it’s not just about a quick haircut and done - they've thought about the whole experience. There’s a fully equipped gaming station and library, so if you’re waiting to get in the chair, there’s something to keep you occupied. Plus fresh coffee, cold drinks, and even beers to make the visit feel less like a chore and more like time well spent.
