Currently the newest distillery to open on Islay (although not for long, and Port Ellen is only quasi new). Ardnahoe is Hunter Laing’s Islay distillery, and it’s a great addition to the island’s collection. Lots of Independent Bottlings in the large shop, an excellent cafe, and dreamy Sound/Paps of Jura views make Ardnahoe unmissable on an Islay Westie Whisky Tour. And if you like peated sherry casks, try to get your hands on the 1st Ardnahoe Society bottling - every bit as good as the Mòine Oloroso produced by their Bunna friends just up the road. In the top 5 of my favourite whiskies of all time, this absolutely stunning Laphroaig 2011 8yo Manzanilla single cask was hand filled using a valinch from a cask in Laphroaig's Warehouse No. 1 in 2019 (yes, I've been very abstemious!). Once again, proof that young(ish) whisky can be absolutely stonking. This is exactly the kind of experience and opportunity you too can enjoy on a Westie Whisky tour. Web link is in the bio.

Campbeltown is, as Talking Heads might affirm, very much on the Road To Nowhere. It used to be one of the whisky capitals of the world, but declined over many years until just Glen Scotia and Springbank distilleries were left. Springbank’s owners reopened Glengyle after a 75 year mothballing, and it is now Campbeltown’s third open distillery, producing limited quantities of Kilkerran whisky over just 12 weeks each year. To peat, or not to peat? That is the question. Here at Westie Whisky we are ambivalent - both are fantastic! And those fine folk at Isle of Arran Distillers obviously felt similarly when they opted to open Lagg Distillery in 2019. Lagg specialises in producing heavily peated whisky, whereas Lochranza, opened in 1995, is now more focused on unpeated drams. Although their more lightly peated Machrie Moor expressions are still around. The cherry on the cake is that Arran have even released a limited edition dram called The Westie - clearly sensible, educated people…

Lottie the Westie has visited all the distilleries on the west coast of Scotland. She has overnighted at Raasay in their excellent distillery hotel rooms, but always enjoyed particularly good sniffs at Lochranza Distillery on the Isle of Arran. The ultimate ferry dog, her favourite vessel was the MV Finlaggan, where the very comfortable dog zone is a great place to spend a couple of hours between Kennacraig and Port Ellen.

Nc’Nean Distillery is right up there in terms of being remote and inaccessible. In the middle of nowhere in Morvern, at the end of a long, single track road alongside the beautiful Sound of Mull, it is a delightful stop waiting to be discovered on a Westie Whisky Tour.

Founded in 2017 by London girl Annabel Thomas, and located on her parents’ west coast farm, Nc’Nean is one of Scotland’s younger distilleries. Its whisky is produced using organic Scottish barley, in a distillery powered entirely by renewable energy, and bottled in 100% recycled glass. In 2021, Nc’Nean became the first distillery in the UK to be verified net zero for carbon emissions.
