A major new car park could soon be built in one of Norfolk’s biggest seaside resorts.

North Norfolk District Council’s cabinet will be asked on Monday to support plans for the new facility in Cromer.

The 44-space pay and display car park would replace the town’s former tennis courts and children’s play area in North Lodge Park. which has been unused for more than 20 years.

A consultation carried out by the council last year found 44.2pc of 788 respondents backed a car park, ahead of 39.8pc who wanted the space kept for community use and 14.1pc who supported commercial use.

Council papers show £250,000 has already been set aside for the scheme in the capital programme, with £13,032 spent so far this year.

NNDC made £2,740,448 from its car parks in 2024 and it represents one of the authority’s largest money makers.

The highest-grossing car park was the 265-space Cromer Meadow, which brought in £395,543.

The council is hoping the new site will provide better parking to the east of the town centre, where officers say off-street parking is limited and on-street parking on residential streets is an increasing problem.

The council held a similar consultation in 2016, however residents were firmly against the plans at the time, with 628 of 799 respondents – 79pc – opposed to a car park on the site.

The cabinet has been recommended to approve the recommendation, and is due to make a decision on Monday, September 7.

It will then be put forward to full council on September 23.
