The beak grows continuously throughout a bird of prey’s lifetime. Our birds typically live longer than a wild bird, so their beak needs to be maintained through coping (hand filing). The beak not only grows in length but also gains extra layering on top which if not filed back could crack, break or prevent the bird from eating. Excess length is snipped off and the beak filed into the correct shape, ensuring a good cutting edge and pointed end to the beak. To finish off, the beak is buffed to remove extra layering and once complete we feed our birds a nice meal for their patience.
Here is Sandor our Harris Hawk getting his beak coped today.
