Raptors do not have sweat glands and this means that they must find other methods to help them stay cool in warm weather.

Panting is one of the best methods to lower a birds body temperature. By increasing the natural breathing rate, heat is lost through their respiratory tract.

Many birds of prey also have bare areas around the face and legs which help with heat loss and the feathers can be fluffed out from the body to help ventilate the body.

When it is hot, we ensure our more sensitive species are not flown at the hottest times of day, that all our birds have access to a nice cool bath, with the occasional misting and that they have plenty of access to shade.

Birds of Prey use their feet as their weapon when hunting and have many adaptations to aid with catching their prey.

Most species have hard scaling around their feet to give protection against bites or scratches from their prey. Some species of owls have feathers in replacement of this scaling.

Raptors all have hard curved keratin talons that can pierce under the skin and cause internal damage as well as creating more purchase.

Toes can either be stocky and shorter or long and skinny depending on the type of prey the bird hunts.

All birds of prey have a locking mechanism in their legs and feet to allow them to bind to prey easily with minimal effort.

Most species of raptors dispatch their prey by applying pressure with the feet. A Eurasian Eagle Owl can produce a pressure strength between 500-700 PSI!

Guinness our African Pied Crow during a flying session! 🖤 🤍

Did you know that Corvids (the crow and raven family) are incredibly strong fliers? Pied Crows are both fast and agile on the wing, this helps them avoid aerial predators and catch prey such as bats!

We’ve had a few rainy days here at the centre, and Leo here has clearly enjoyed it, rocking a new feathered hairstyle! 🦉

The long-eared owl gets its name because of two little feather tufts on top of their head, nothing to do with their ears or hearing! The tufts, known as plumicorns, can break up the outline of an owl’s silhouette, making it harder for them to be spotted when camouflaging amongst trees! Leo here is demonstrating that these are indeed nothing but feather, easily flattened down with a little rainfall !🌧️

Rogue keeping her eyes on the prize!

Birds of prey have excellent vision and can see at great distances, see more colours than we do and are extremely motion sensitive. All these factors make them incredible hunters!
