Our lovely local railway Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway Co.Ltd is officially 150 years old today! It’s a fabulous day out for steam train lovers old and young. We love it (we event hired a train for our wedding party!)

Happy 150th Birthday to our wonderful Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway! 🎉🥳🍾🚂

What an incredible milestone as today, 24th May 2025, we celebrate 150 years of the best little railway in the world! The La'al Ratty has delighted generations with its beautiful steam engines, small carriages and magnificent scenery since it opened in 1875.

Don’t forget that the Wasdale Explorer bus runs on weekends and bank holidays throughout the summer. A great way to get to Wasdale Head with no need to worry about where to park. What’s more, it’s free!

Great for a linear walk too!

Muncaster Castle is a great day out and is a short drive from us.

You can visit the castle, the gardens, the weapons hall and the Hawk and Owl Centre. Fabulous displays of owls there 🦉🦉🦉

We took advantage of the free Wasdale shuttle bus on Bank Holiday Monday and did a linear walk over the top of the Wastwater Screes.

Park at the free car park at Nether Wasdale (across the road from the Sawmill, on the left after the bridge as you come from Santon Bridge)

We walked to the ridge and took the bridleway that goes over to Eskdale. Turned left once on the ridge to summit Whin Rigg, then on to Illgill Head. Fantastic views from the top. Dropped down to Wasdale Head to join the track from Burnmoor Tarn and caught the free bus back to Nether Wasdale. A grand day out. The bus is doggy friendly too 🐾

Goosepen Cottage is one of a handful of properties at Hallflat Farm, and is named from the old goose pen that is now occupied by the cottage garden. Tucked away in a quiet spot away from the road and farm entrance, the cottage oozes character with many original features, including exposed stone walls and original oak beams. The cottage has full gas central heating in addition to the wood burner, to keep you warm and cosy on those colder days. The cottage is surrounded by fields, woods and impressive hills and mountains and yet is only 200m from a pub serving good beer and quality food. Hallflat Farm and Wasdale is located amongst the stunning scenery of the remote and uncommercialised Western Lake District. Wasdale boasts England's highest mountain (Scafell Pike), deepest lake (Wastwater), smallest church (St Olaf's, Wasdale Head) and Biggest Liar. The World's Biggest Liar is an annual competition held at our local pub, The Bridge Inn, and dates back to the 19th Century when a local landlord, Will Ritson, earned the title with his tall stories about the Wasdale area.

Goosepen Cottage welcomes up to 3 dogs. Please see our ‘dogs at Goosepen’ guidelines if you would like to bring your four legged friend with you.
