One incredible week on Scotland’s west coast

This week’s small group came for wildlife — and Lochaline delivered. White-tailed sea eagles wheeling overhead from the boat, otters and their young working the tide line, pine martens visiting at dusk, and stags holding their ground against the autumn light.

Six days, three clients, and images they’ll be looking at for years.

Mum otter, taking five

While her cubs sleep tucked up nearby, she hauls out on the shore for a proper feed — otters need to eat little and often to keep their metabolism going, so these quiet moments matter as much as the hunting.

Patience is everything with otter photography. Wait long enough, low enough, and quiet enough, and you get moments like this.

Another amazing day yesterday making images of the majestic White Tailed Eagle. We were out with on what has to be the best eagle trip! We had unbelievable opportunities to capture images with a total of 7 different eagles ranging from one of the youngest at approximately 4 months up to the eldest at 32 years.
Phenomenal and the best part is I get to do it all again with next weeks clients!

Just come back from Finland, photos coming soon, and straight into maintenance. The weather has prompted an early pond maintenance but happy to see we have a very healthy wildlife pond. Photos 3&4 show strings of snail eggs and this year we've not had an algae issue. A lovely bucket of nitrogen for the compost Thank you snails 🐌

Arrived in Kuhmo, Finland late yesterday with 4 great clients for our Bears Wolves and Wolverine trip.

Just in the bear hide now for our first night session. 40 minutes in and our first bear appeared. Just posting a couple of back of camera shots. Edits to follow

Hornet Mimic Hoverfly — a garden first (and maybe a UK first-of-its-kind for us!)

Today this beauty turned up in the garden here in Fife — Volucella zonaria, the Hornet Mimic Hoverfly. It's the UK's largest hoverfly, and despite the fearsome hornet-striped costume, it's completely harmless - all bluff, no sting. A brilliant piece of Batesian mimicry: no weapon, just a very convincing disguise to keep predators guessing.

What's got us properly excited is the location.

Checking against NBN Atlas records, this looks set to be the most northerly sighting of this species in the UK — we've submitted it for official verification now. If confirmed, it's a striking sign of how this once southern-England specialist is pushing steadily north as our climate shifts.

A tiny garden encounter, but a genuine data point for a much bigger story.

Moments like this are exactly why we garden the way we do - pollinator-friendly, chemical-free, and full of surprises if you take the time to look closely.

Its always fun catching up with these guys. Fortunately most of the locations we take clients to doesn’t require you being in a hide. You can just be out in the open, as long as you employ good fieldcraft practises the squirrels seem to prefer knowing whats there and just go about their normal life, as can be seen here.

A highly successful workshop yesterday. We go to the Isle of May approx. 4 times a year but this trip was probably the best ever.

There were literally 1000's of these awesome birds either flying, standing with mouthful's of sand eels or in groups looking like they were having a meeting of where to go next. A real treat.
