These fabulous photos are from Alexandre and Jerome who rented two of our R 1250 GS Adventures for an adventure around Scotland last July.

Not only did they send us these magnificent photos of their trip, but they had these very kind words to say of their experience with us too:

"Outstanding service and responsiveness before the trip. We received very clear and helpful answers to all of our questions.

"Excellent welcome and service during the collection of the motorcycles (which were fabulous).

"We had a blast during our trip, and so much luck with the weather. We maybe had 10 minutes of light rain during the first day in the Cairngorms but apart from this, we had a fantastic weather. Everything went smoothly upon return as well - a big thank you!"

This is Tony who joined us on last year's IOM TT Tour. He sent us this glowing review of his experience:

"What can I say? It was an absolutely amazing experience! I would really not change any part of it. This was the first motorcycle tour I have ever been on but knowing Martin from my prior trip to Scotland and my experience with you and MotoJoe in the past, I had absolutely no worries or concerns that it would be anything less than well organized and properly put together. It all starts with the motorcycle itself and to be able to rent a like-new GS1300 was an absolute treat, and knowing your team looks after your bikes I was very relaxed as I knew I was riding a very safe modern machine and that is a big deal to me. Well done to your team. All aspects of the tour from the restaurants, to the daily options to participate with the group and riding every day, the convenient and good breakfast at the hotel, which was a great hotel, to touring around the island and visiting museums and stopping for lunch at different places was great. Martin always made sure we had a really good vantage point from which to watch the race and it felt like VIP treatment. Having a guide like that to ensure we do the best activities and visit the best places, using Martin’s knowledge and experience, was perfect.

"I would like to thank you very much for organizing it all. Whenever I am back in Scotland I will be sure to reach out!"

Feeling inspired by Tony's experience? Don't risk FOMO... sign up for our 2027 IoM TT tour before it sells out - the 2026 tour is already fully booked 😉

The name Eilean Donan, or island of Donan, is suggested to be named after the 6th century Irish Saint, Bishop Donan who came to Scotland around 580 AD.

There are several churches dedicated to Donan in the area and it is probably that he formed a small cell or community on the island all the way back in the late 7th century.

The first fortified structure was built on the island in the early 13th century as a defensive measure, protecting the lands of Kintail against the Vikings who raided, settled and controlled much of the North of Scotland and the Western Isles between 800 and 1266.

From the mid 13th century, this area was the quite seperate “Sea Kingdom” of the Lord of the Isles where the sea was the main highway and the power of feuding clan chiefs was counted by the number of men and galleys or “birlinns” at their disposal.

Over the centuries, the castle itself has changed in size. The medieval castle was likely the largest, with towers and a curtain wall that encompassed nearly the entire island.

Around the end of the 14th century the area of the castle was reduced to about a fifth of its original size and, although the reason is unclear, it probably relates to the number of people required to defend the structure.

Eilean Donan also played a role in the Jacobite risings of the 17th and 18th centuries, which ultimately culminated in the castle’s destruction.

In 1719 the castle was garrisoned by 46 Spanish soldiers who were supporting the Jacobites. They had established a magazine of gunpowder, and were awaiting the delivery of weapons and cannon from Spain. The English Government caught wind of the intended uprising and sent three heavily armed frigates The Flamborough, The Worcester, and The Enterprise to quell matters. The bombardment of the castle lasted three days, though met with limited success due to the enormity of the castle walls, which in some places are up to 14 feet thick. Finally, Captain Herdman of The Enterprise sent his men ashore and over-whelmed the Spanish defenders. Following the surrender, the government troops discovered the magazine of 343 barrels of gunpowder which was then used to blow up what had remained from the bombardment…

For the best part of 200 years, the stark ruins of Eilean Donan lay neglected, abandoned and open to the elements, until Lt Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911. Alongside help, he dedicated the next 20 years of his life to the reconstruction of Eilean Donan, restoring it to its former glory.

The castle was rebuilt according to the surviving ground plan of earlier phases and was formally completed in the July of 1932.

A magnificent castle that's well worth a visit!
