We have picked six lesser-known stone circles in the Dales where the solstice feels a bit more yours.

𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘁: Gamelands near Orton is the easy pick, short walk from the village, wide western views, a chocolate factory tearoom close by. Yockenthwaite in Langstrothdale is just as good via the Dales Way.

𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆'𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗲-𝗱𝗮𝘄𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝗻𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 (~𝟰:𝟯𝟰𝗮𝗺): head for Oddendale or White Hag on Crosby Ravensworth Fell; remote open fell, wide sky, very few other people.

Save this infographic for your planning.It is an early drive and a torch is required. Check access and weather before you go, keep to paths, and go lightly. 👍

Killhope Burn, where the River Wear really begins.

Far to the west of County Durham on the North Pennines, stands a large and barren hill known as Killhope Moor. From it, a stream of water emerges. The stream works its way down hill for 13km or so, before it meets another burn at Wearhead, formally creating the River Wear, which over millions of years has carved out a noticeable valley.

On this same set of hills,two other of the North East's major rivers also emerge, the South Tyne, as well as the Tees.

The meaning of the word Stile, goes back to the old English word " stigel" which is related to the word "stigan ", meaning "to climb". Words are truly wonderful.

You've almost certainly walked past it. Might even have brushed against it and caught that faint, sweet smell without knowing why.

Sweet cicely (Myrrhis odorata) grows all over the Yorkshire Dales: along our roadsides, beside the river, at the edges of fields. It's one of the first plants to appear each spring. Crush a leaf: smell aniseed. For centuries it served as a natural sweetener, a cough remedy, a furniture polish.

Today is 🌿 The theme this year is medicinal and aromatic plants. We reckon the Dales have a few worth celebrating.

Looking for a varied short walk with great views. Snaisgill and Hudeshope Woods from Beck Road is a 2 1/2 mile route which is a good walk at any time of year. Want something a bit longer ? Add Aukside for a 4 mile walk. Of course for a few more yards you can easily start from Middleton.

Whatever happened to leave no trace wild camping?

Sadly, this is something land managers regularly come across on the moors. It’s disappointing that a small minority can spoil it for everyone else.

Landowners are not opposed to genuine responsible wild camping, arriving late, leaving early, and leaving no sign you were ever there. Unfortunately, they too often find mess like this that has to be cleared up, which inevitably affects how future activity is viewed.

A rare map moment is moving on. 🧭

This Saturday, 13 December, England says goodbye to a phenomenon centuries in the making. The rare alignment of the three norths; True north, Magnetic north, and Grid north, leaves England at Berwick-upon-Tweed after three historic years together.

Events like this have not been recorded since the 1600s and once it departs, the alignment will not return for hundreds of years. Next stop? Scotland in 2026, before disappearing back into the North Sea.

Will this change how you navigate? No. Good map and compass users already account for the differences between Magnetic and Grid north.

But as rare moments go, this ones worth marking on the map.
