It’s important to share safety issues when a lot of our customers go in to buy their own campers or motorhomes or attempt to build their own.

🔧 HABITATION CHECKS – WHY THEY MATTER 🔧
We recently carried out a habitation inspection on a motorhome and uncovered several serious issues that highlight exactly why regular professional checks are so important.
During our inspection we found multiple electrical connections that had become heavily corroded, preventing the battery charger from operating correctly. After cleaning the connections and replacing a corroded fuse, the charger was restored and working as intended.
However, further investigation revealed more concerning issues.
⚠️ The electrical installation had not been completed to current standards, with several connections simply covered in electrical tape. Electrical connections should only be accessible using a key or tool and must be installed in accordance with current safety regulations.
⚠️ The gas installation was also found to be incorrectly fitted. Any gas connection has the potential to leak, which is why correctly positioned gas drop holes are a critical safety requirement. While gas drop holes had been fitted near the water heater and isolation taps, no gas drop hole had been installed beneath the hob, meaning the installation did not comply with the manufacturer’s instructions.
When purchasing a professionally built coach-built motorhome from a reputable dealer, you would normally expect to receive:
✅ An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) completed by a qualified electrician (NICEIC registered)
✅ A Gas Installation Certificate completed by a Gas Safe registered engineer
Unfortunately, due to the number and severity of faults identified, it became clear that neither the gas nor electrical systems had been installed by someone with the appropriate qualifications or experience. We believe this vehicle had been self-built or extensively modified outside of recognised industry standards.
As a result, we were unable to continue with the habitation service or sign the vehicle off as safe.
Your caravan or motorhome is your home away from home. Ensuring that gas, electrical and safety systems are installed and maintained correctly isn’t just about passing a habitation check – it’s about protecting you and your family.
If you’re unsure about the safety of your caravan, campervan or motorhome, get in touch with us to arrange a professional inspection.
